Great progression from the first one.,

This book carries on from the first in the series, and is more or everything - more action, more thrills, more nail-biting, edge of the seat action, and an even more satisfying conclusion.
The plotting is tight and has lots of unexpected twists and turns, in time as well as events, but it all comes together perfectly in the end. We see our old favourite characters, Becky, Joe and Uncle Percy, Will and the rest, plus some exciting new ones. The action moves to such diverse places as New York and the Caribbean and plenty of diverse times as well. There is a flavour of the Pirates or the Caribbean movies too - which adds to the fun.
Altogether an excellent successor to book one and leaves us looking forward to the next installment.

Another shining series that engages the young & the young of heart.

5 stars for top value, great reads, great entertainment.

I bought the first of the series from an ad-hoc flag via Kindle Buffet, consumed it & bought the 2nd without hesitation (no sampling needed). At the end of the 2nd, left still wanting for more, rinse and repeat upon realising the 3rd of the series was also already out there.

The series "may" be a little (very little) predictable in parts but that's not necessarily a bad thing & made up for in equal or more parts of the unexpected. Great twists on some points of history & mythology. NOT in any way shape or form a time travelling norm of travel in time, get trapped & then endure a long drawn out possibly boring account of how to get back.

Look forward to touching base "solidly" with the kids Dad; hope that is coming very soon in the series & can't wait for the next in the series; please keep them coming.

An excellent and imaginative sequel

This is a very entertaining and fast moving sequel. With expositions out of the way in the first book, its full throttle from word go in this one. There are pauses for breath but not too many. The villains are delightfully evil creating a sense of foreboding danger throughout the story. The adventures of the 2 children and their eccentric Uncle (who is both a time traveller and inventor) are imaginative and thrilling. There is an underlying story arc throughout the series and this adventure directly relates to it. What I find extremely fun in this instalment is the multiple historical and mythical legends the author has thrown into this concoction. It is a very eclectic mix and even crosses genres. I wont name them because part of the fun is discovering each legend as they continue on their quest.

I have just one small gripe. I feel there is a tad too many modern pop culture references thrown in for the sake of identifying the time the children belong, it takes me out of the immersion in the story.

This is quite a frantic page turner and very much a rollicking children's read but parents take note that there is a slight shade of descriptive gore, otherwise its good scary fun for the children and young adults. Adults will equally enjoy reading this too but there is a distinct child lock on the narrative. So its all kept nice and innocent at the same time.

I very much look forward to the release of the next instalment.

Strelley joined the Rajneesh movement in 1976 as a girl of 15 and left it just before its highly publicized collapse in 1985. This book, which purports to be an account of the rise and fall of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, is actually the story of one unhappy girl's attempt to find peace through personal surrender. Like Hugh Milne's Bhagwan: the God that failed ( LJ 3/15/87) this tale of petty bickering, grandiose plans, and ultimate disappointment fails to explain the allure of Bhagwan or the dynamics of his movement. Moreover, flawed by a haphazard, breathless style and an episodic organization that blurs the narrative, it is more irritating than illuminating. Personal, informative, interesting

For those who want to know what went on in Rajneesh's ashram"s at Poona,and Antelope, Oregan, this book can be useful. Kate Strelley has given a lucid autobiographical account of her experience at the ashrams of Rajneesh. I also got the impression that most of the devotees of Bhagwan Rajneesh were quite green behind their ears, not to have noticed what was really going on, and that the Master they so much admired was not following what he so brilliantly preached.
The books of Rajneesh are insightful and superb. If you want to know the essence of Tantra. Taoism, or Zen, you need only to go through the books of Rajneesj(Osho). But for the life of me I cannot understand why the so-called sanyasins gleefully put up with the pompous ceremonies of their Master when his Zen teachings clearly spelled out that the ordinary is extraordinary and that everyone is a celebrity.
I wish that Rajneesh had followed his Zen insights. He reminds me of a friend of mine who is a brilliant expert on nutrition but is very obese.

Subtitle is inappropriate

Based on the subtitle of the book, one might expect this to be a history of the Rajneeshees and their eventual establishment of a large community in Oregon. Instead, this book is basically an autobiography of a former Rajneeshee, who does touch on some of the more infamous actions by the Rajneeshees. There is precious little detail on the salmonella poisonings in The Dalles, the political posturing in Antelope and other parts of the state, or even the anti-Rajneeshee actions such as the bombing of the Zorba the Buddha restaurant. Good for those who want to read an autobiography of someone who was in the movement, but hardly a tome about "the rise and fall of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh."

A FORMER DISCIPLE TELLS OF HER 9 YEARS WITH RAJNEESH

The Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (born Chandra Mohan Jain; 1931-1990; he changed his name to "Osho" shortly before his death) was a controversial Indian spiritual teacher with an international following. His teachings on Tantra and sexuality earned him the name "the sex guru" in the mass media; he moved his ashram from India to Oregon in 1981, where they had substantial conflicts with the local community (including a criminal food contamination attack on Oregon residents ordered by the ashram leaders); he was deported in 1985 [see Bhagwan: Twelve Days That Shook the World], and finally settled in India again, where he died. His teachings continue to be promoted by the Osho International Meditation Resort. His daily lectures were recorded for many years, and turned into books such as I Am the Gate: The Meaning of Initiation and Discipleship, Book of the Secrets Three, Philosophia Perennis Volume 2, etc.

Other books about him include Dying for Enlightenment: Living with Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, Bhagwan: The God That Failed, The Promise of Paradise, The Quest for Total Bliss, The Golden Guru, etc.

Author Kate Strelley wrote in the Preface to this 1987 book, "Since the writing of this book Bhagwan has returned to the original site in Poona. Messages have gone out to all sannyasins to send donations and return to live and work once again in the Ashram. It is amazing just how many people have chosen to return, together with many new people. It would seem the cycle continues... This book has given me a chance to go over the past, especially the way I viewed life and the players in it..."

She notes, "Gurdjieff was an admitted influence on Bhagwan, and many of his ideas and ways of working with his followers paralleled much of what Bhagwan taught." (Pg. 12) She suggests, "In time, with proper training... the 'alchemy' (as Bhagwan called it) began to work on you, making you less and less trusting of your own instincts, reasoning, and emotions, and more and more pliable to manipulation by the office or the Master. Your own mind was artfully guided into a series of preconditioned ways of thinking that always challenged doubt or defiance and nudged your toward surrender to Bhagwan's will." (Pg. 81) She adds, "Question yourself was the overriding principle." (Pg. 86)

She recalls, "That was the amazing thing about Bhagwan: Each sannyasin would fall in love with him in his or her own way. Some wanted to be his lover; some wanted to be ... devotees. each was there for him for a particular reason... I valued him as a master who not only tells you a story, but lets you live it." (Pg. 102) She explains, "Some people might cry, 'Mass hypnosis!' Others might say, 'Brainwashing!' ... I'd call it 'mass self-hypnosis.' ... In the Ashram this kind of stimulation was happening continually. This was why we felt high all the time. When we returned alone to the West we would fall into a depression, almost a withdrawal." (Pg. 188)

She observes, "Bhagwan was an amazing mass-marketer. Most religious organizations go through one channel to get their adherents...In the Ashram there were as many different appeals as there were sannyasins. Anyone who opened a center signed a release in advance that distanced the Ashram from any negative fallout... The Ashram relied on individuals, using their own creativity, to attract people---though this was never an official program. The Ashram never appeared to be telling anyone what to do. This was the brillliance of the approach, because people put MORE energy into what they felt was their own effort all the way. Because nothing was ever ASKED of them, people would send part of what they made to the Ashram." (Pg. 317)

About the Author
Tim Thompson is a Reader in Biological and Forensic Anthropology at Teesside University, where he also acts as a consultant forensic anthropologist. Most of his research examines the effects of burning on the skeleton and how this can help interpret the context of death. Intense from beginning to end

When Evil Whispers

This is one of those books that's hard to put down! A very insightful, thought provoking, heart pounding book about the reality of the evil works of Satanists/Occultists in a small town and the Greater power of God. This is one of the best books I have read on this topic! The author, Tim Thompson stated "This book is not intended for a person just getting into spiritual warfare or a person raised in the church, this book is intended for those who are coming out of very evil and wicked sins, by helping people understand that no matter what sin you have committed, the blood of Jesus and Jesus Christ name is above every name!"

I highly reccommend When Evil Whispers for that same catagory of individuals and for mature believers in Christ. It is not "sugar coated". Not for the weak minded as it may be graphic and disturbing for some readers. Evil does exist and it is ugly.

The message the author wanted to share was lost

Like Demons Exposed, I think this subject can be better written that to give so much glorification to sexual immorality and then try to counteract it with a few pages of scripture verses simply listed without actually relating them to the previous book of sinful glorification. I'm sorry I wasted my money on this book.
Frankly I was so disappointed because this is a subject so dear to my heart since I minister to so many caught up in the paranormal and all things demonic. The subject is too important to waste by presenting the sins and God's instructions in this manner. How much better the book would have been had Thompson actually gone to the trouble of showing what God's word says about the sin and showing how God has conquered all sin through Jesus Christ throughout the book. To simply list a few scripture verses at the end just doesn't cut it. I think Thompson wants to show that any sin can be forgiven by God, no matter how foul and distasteful. But the story itself, although horrific, can be so titillating that one can read the book, skip the last 4 pages and miss the whole point he was trying to make.
Tim, this is an important subject and you have a lot to share - please try again.

There are many tools we can use to deal with adversity which already exist. Automobile insurance reimburses you if your car is stolen/damaged. Vaccines prevent various illnesses and auxiliary sluice gates prevent a dam from bursting or overflowng. These are all wonderful things, but deal with a known peril or perils. But what if we encounter an uncovered or unexpected type of adversity? In addition, we also don't know when or possibly how to be vigilant. For example, how can we possibly prepare ourselves to deal with our best friend losing his parents after they're shot during a bank robbery? 

I'm a simple guy and have no way to predict the future, so there has to be another way to prepare for adversity. But, why go to the trouble of looking for some tool or framework to help in the first place? Because it acts as a sort of emotional insurance policy since it's not unheard of to be overwhelmed by an unexpected problem. Not only may the original issue remain unresolved but it might compound and drive you into a rut as you struggle to deal with it. An example would be for social drinking to become more of an issue while you're trying to deal with your friend's parents' killing. 

So, if we can't predict the future and know about specific tragic events ahead of time, what can be done? How do we better prepare to make choices, learn and move on? 

LIFETIME REFERENCE BOOK: I can't say I'm the world's biggest expert in this area. Who is? But I do have a lot of experience successfully dealing with many of life's issues (ex: family deaths, chronic illness, divorce, loss of children, unemployment, crime, financial loss, employment discrimination). Enough experience to know that there's more than one way to cope. So, I've drawn on my coping skills and written a guide you can use for a lifetime. The tools are adaptable to your personality and comfort level because I've provided 4 models you can select from: Process, anecdotal, inspirational and humorous.

Refreshing open book we all can relate to

Well written with unpretentious candor and humor. Andrew definitely touches many bases in the game of life. Most of all there is hope and reality that many times, when all else fails nothing beats positive attitude and clear mind. I simply enjoyed it and honored to have traveled challenges of life with the author through this book. Very easy read thanks to Andrew's honest sincere style.

This book is a must read for all of us.

This is an honest and engaging account of one man's life. The author takes a hard look at his own life's serious challenges, both medical and personal, and derives life lessons at each turn.

He has surmounted many tragedies, and has developed a general plan for people to remain positive. The author has learned how to retain a sense of humor about life and has keen insight into his own. This book explains how each of us can develop our own blueprint for coping with life's serious adversities and for mistakes we've made. The author sets an example for overcoming these obstacles and for becoming better people.

I was inspired by the author's determination to move forward despite suffering numerous set backs. Also, the book is easy reading and funny as well. It ends on a high note and is highly recommended.

Life Is about possibility and Hope.....and never forget that.

Those words above are one of many life's lessons in which this author presents to the reader. A engaging story based on constant bad circumstances and the bumps and bangs along the road of the authors life. The author faces a mire of complex life struggling situations all rife with adversity. His inner strengths and great ability to confront and reflect upon his personal challenges saved him. It is a book about lessons, a book about personal tests and triumph. It is a story of hope, relentless perseverance, victory and gratitude. There are many valuable lessons to be learned in an entire lifetime, the author offers many and all of his "Life Lessons" are well worth the read.

Carolyn Tuttle led a group that interviewed 620 women maquila workers in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico. The responses from this representative sample refute many of the hopeful predictions made by scholars before NAFTA and reveal instead that little has improved for maquila workers. The women's stories make it plain that free trade has created more low-paying jobs in sweatshops where workers are exploited. Families of maquila workers live in one- or two-room houses with no running water, no drainage, and no heat. The multinational companies who operate the maquilas consistently break Mexican labor laws by requiring women to work more than nine hours a day, six days a week, without medical benefits, while the minimum wage they pay workers is insufficient to feed their families. These findings will make a crucial contribution to debates over free trade, CAFTA-DR, and the impact of globalization.

The ?eld of sensory science has grown exponentially since the publication of the p- vious version of this work. Fifteen years ago the journal Food Quality and Preference was fairly new. Now it holds an eminent position as a venue for research on sensory test methods (among many other topics). Hundreds of articles relevant to sensory testing have appeared in that and in other journals such as the Journal of Sensory Studies. Knowledge of the intricate cellular processes in chemoreception, as well as their genetic basis, has undergone nothing less than a revolution, culminating in the award of the Nobel Prize to Buck and Axel in 2004 for their discovery of the olfactory receptor gene super family. Advances in statistical methodology have accelerated as well. Sensometrics meetings are now vigorous and well-attended annual events. Ideas like Thurstonian modeling were not widely embraced 15 years ago, but now seem to be part of the everyday thought process of many sensory scientists. And yet, some things stay the same. Sensory testing will always involve human participants. Humans are tough measuring instruments to work with. They come with varying degrees of acumen, training, experiences, differing genetic equipment, sensory capabilities, and of course, different preferences. Human foibles and their associated error variance will continue to place a limitation on sensory tests and actionable results. Reducing, controlling, partitioning, and explaining error variance are all at the heart of good test methods and practices.

Although methods continue to evolve, appreciation of the core principles of the field is the key to effective application of sensory test methods. This book has been expanded to reflect the advances in methodologies, theory, and analysis that have transpired in the last 15 years. The chapters are now divided into numbered subsections. This may be of assistance to educators who may wish to assign only certain critical sections to beginning students. In some of the opening sections instructors will find suggestions about which sections are key for fundamental understanding of that topic or method. In many chapters we have gone out on a limb and specified a “recommended procedure.” In cases where there are multiple options for procedure or analysis, we usually chose a simple solution over one that is more complex.

This text attempts to be comprehensive, yet understandable to all students at the university level. All the major sensory test methods are illustrated and discussed, including discrimination, descriptive, and affective tests. Some chapters are devoted to special topics, such as thresholds, time-intensity methods, similarity testing, color, texture, sensory quality control, qualitative research methods, consumer test methods and questionnaires, shelf life testing, an introduction to multivariate statistical techniques, and strategic sensory research. The statistical appendix provides basic instruction in the common statistical analyses for sensory evaluation with worked examples.

Harry T. Lawless is Professor of Food Science at Cornell University where he teaches sensory evaluation. He has 35 years of experience in chemosensory research and psychophysics. He spent five years in consumer testing in industry, and serves as a consultant to various food and consumer products companies on sensory test methods.

Hildegarde Heymann is Professor of Viticulture and Enology at the University of California at Davis where she teaches sensory evaluation of wine and sensometrics. She spent nearly 17 years at the University of Missouri as a professor of sensory science.

Required for class, also a great reference

Ordered the book from Amazon and got it very quickly. It was required for the class I'm taking, but there's a wealth of information inside, and I'm definitely hanging on to it as a reference once the course is done.

Not only does it provide a practical and theoretical overview of sensory testing, but it contains all of the statistics necessary to evaluate your experiments. There are plenty of reference tables in the appendix, removing the need to do a lot of math in order to determine significance of results.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is in the sensory field

Interesting and well-written book matter

The book itself is a little dry, however, it conveys what you need to know in an understandable way. It provides examples of the statistics involved in sensory testing and many other examples of real-life situations. I did enjoy this book and it worked well with the class I took.
