Ego: The Game of Life, by Frank Schirrmacher

Twenty-five years after the end of the Cold War, a new Cold War is being waged in our societies. During the Cold War a theoretical model of man was developed by economists and the military, an egotistical being interested only in his own benefit and in duping his opponents to achieve his ends: a modern homo oeconomicus. After his career in the Cold War ended, he was not scrapped but adapted to the needs of the twenty-first century. He became the ringmaster of a new era of information capitalism. He sought to read, control and influence thoughts; to predict, price and eliminate risks. Today stock-market trading is guided by him. He uses computer algorithms and Big Data to build up detailed pictures of our preferences and then suggest and sell goods to us. The model has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. We are no longer the masters of our own fate. The Game of Life runs without us.

Schirrmacher traces the progress of this extreme rationalization of social life from the Cold War games of the 1950s Rand Corporation to the stock-market trading techniques that brought about the financial crash of 2008, showing how these developments were interwoven with the rise of game theory, rational choice theory and neoliberal economics. The state and politics increasingly submitted themselves to the logic of computerized game theory and an economistic view of the world, evading real decision-making in the process. In this brave new world individuals, alone in front of their computers, may think they are constructing a reality of their own choosing, but in fact they are being manipulated all along by others who are setting the rules of the game.

This international bestseller by one of Germany?s most distinguished journalists is a powerful indictment of a way of thinking that has become pervasive and threatens to undermine not only parliaments and constitutions but also the sovereignty of the individual to be the person he or she wants to be.

Review

"Frank Schirrmacher convincingly shows connections among such ostensibly disparate issues as the language of the Cold War and that of the trading floor, as he demonstrates how algorithms and statistical models have become the overwhelmingly dominant means we use to understand the brain, the market, the state and nature. In the end the human person becomes defined as a problem, because unable to be reduced to calculation in this way. This critique of contemporary egoism from the editor of Germany?s leading liberal conservative newspaper makes chilling but highly thought-provoking reading."
Colin Crouch, University of Warwick

"This book reads like a sociological thriller."
Ulrich Beck, Die Welt

"A piece of cultural criticism in the very best sense: a diagnosis, prognosis and cure all in one for our technologically induced egoism."
Der Tagesspiegel

"This book is an urgently needed appeal for us to rethink what we understand by economic rationality."
Handelsblatt

"In this new book, Frank Schirrmacher once again shows an extraordinary understanding of the volatility of our times, bringing into focus the widespread discontent felt in many sections of society."
Tages-Anzeiger

About the Author

It's a John Nash world out there
By David Wineberg
Ego: The Game of Life in inflammatory. Extraordinarily so. On nearly every other page there is an inflammatory statement to challenge the reader. It is relentless and effective. Right in the preface, Schirrmacher says in the game of life, you have to accept the idea that “the universe has singled you out to be its personal enemy.” It is not possible for me to put down a book that begins this way. And it does not disappoint.

At its core is Schirrmacher’s premise that rational choice theory and game theory are now running society. And that they were developed by a certified paranoid schizophrenic – John Nash. Nash could not countenance people acting selflessly. Fraternity and solidarity made no sense to Nash, who dismissed them as factors. It was all about self interest, and nothing else mattered. Nash is aided and abetted by economists who invented homo economicus, the evil twin of every human, who only acts selfishly to maximize returns. Plugged into faulty, incomplete models, the results have been unparalleled disasters, producing “impossible” failures and repeated once in a million year setbacks.

We are now players in John Nash’s game, the game of life. Google, Yahoo, Amazon and Facebook all build assumptions about us. They take us in new directions whether we want to go or not. Google Adwords uses an algorithm reputed to be the most advanced in the world, more sophisticated than any military app, which also models everyone and every action on Nash’s paranoia. Every internet search is an ad auction that adds to the knowledgebase. They are same as the algorithms used by hedge funds and real time traders, pumping millions of trades around the clock. Finance and the internet are merging to dominate everything.

This reductive analysis is as good as any out there, and better than most. But the primary impact from the book is in the challenging statements that pop up continually. Some are Schirrmacher’s and some are from other people, but they all have the same disturbing quality:

-The Cold War simply moved to Wall Street.
-After the end of the Cold War, a new cold war is opening up in the heart of societies.
-Economists invented homo economicus and convinced the world that it was natural law.
-Wall Street has reinvented the alchemist, turning worthless paper into real money at will.
-Derivatives went from zero in the 1970s to $1.2 quadrillion: 20 times more than the GNP of the world.
-In the 50s, stocks were held an average of four years. In 2010 it was two months. In 2014 it was 22 seconds.
-The most imperialistic economic theory was obviously Marxism.
-Everywhere today it is a binary question of exclusion or inclusion. You are with us or against us, you are worthy or not, you are in or you’re out.
-Individuals are being fashioned by the machinery of an unrestrained information market.
-What if the system didn’t reflect our “preferences”, but actively shaped them?
-The Philosopher’s Stone was not a stone but a fluid: pure liquidity
-Information is not the precursor of knowledge, but the tool of salesmen.
-Twenty years’ experience is really one year of experience repeated twenty times.
-Computers, from stock exchange terminals to PCs are merely tools that imitate the capabilities of the autistic.

He lays the blame for the financial crisis squarely on the shoulders of John Nash and those who leverage him. The perverse result is the twisted, unequal society we have today. Schirrmacher died in 2014 at the age of 54. It’s unfortunate he is not around to collect the reactions to The Game of Life, and tell us how right he was.

The author hates self as he has no self-respect to do even basic research?
By I'm no expert, yet...
It would be nice if author had enough ego/self-respect to do basic research.

A lot of readers may react this way:

His conception of what rationality and self-interest mean in economics, psychology, and Aristotelian philosophy is equivalent to someone making assumptions about the meaning instead of actually understanding how the term is used in those subjects.

The dead giveaway is e.g. his ridiculous misrepresentations of game theory or the work of Ayn Rand.

Note to author: Reading the actual works or using GOOGLE is a good thing. What is going on in Germany that this is even considered a respectable work by reviewers?

Don't Just Read It, Experience It.
By J. S. Warren
Gede Parma is a gifted witch, shaman, mystic, and author. He is a poet, who uses his gifts to see truths and bring them to us in a magical bypass of our critical intellect. And he is the teacher you may have been waiting for.

The book is intended for mature individuals who are experienced in their spiritual path. It is intended for deepening one's experience. First read these words from the book: 'Many of the topics withing these pages are deeply confrontative and can be dangerous. To read on is to acknowledge Witchcraft as a true wisdom tradition abiding only by the precept of TOTAL FREEDOM EQUALS TOTAL RESPONSIBILITY. I shall leave the ethics to the deeper selves of all of you.'

If you don't understand the above paragraph, you are not ready. RESPONSIBILITY IS KEY. And maturity. That said the actual review follows.

ECSTATIC WITCHCRAFT brings a new vision of what mysticism, witchcraft, or shamanism can be. Gede Parma brings to mind sayings of avatars and seers of old who spoke, 'You may have heard it said..., but I say...' In other words his insights are fresh. They may surprise. But, you may be inspired to read parts of this book, if not the whole book, over and over. And you may be inspired to learn some of the experiential practices he offers. I recommend the experiential over the intellectual pursuit of continuous reading of a subject. Try the practices he describes.

The author takes us through an explanation of ecstasy in the shamanic sense. Lifted out of one's ordinary perception of reality and slipped into a new perception of non-ordinary reality. Finding there new truths or a new connection with the divine by whatever name or names you may call the living energy universe. He spins out the cosmology of his vision and brings us a new understanding of the Triple Soul and an understanding of how to align and balance our separate selves. He gives us technologies to help us access these aspects of self. We learn of the relationship of these worlds of our soul with the World Tree shared by shamanic paths the world over.

One of my favorite teachings is the concept of God Herself. It is a liberating idea. The author suggests we say it aloud. 'God Herself!' It removes the gender bias of the Goddess. Yet we all know that God has no gender in reality. When we say "God Herself" we elevate the Goddess and remove the patriarchal bias of he/she. This is one of the many concepts Gede Parma explores which, alone, makes the book worth purchasing.

Another powerful teaching explores spellcraft, responsibility and Maslow's hierarchy of needs. He explores intention and passion and the connection with the elements. Wow. I was given a vision past theology of any sort and into a technology that connects us with our power and with the other teachings combined, an alignment with the divine. If your remember Heinlein's term GROK, you will grok things that may have evaded you in the past.

I can't recommend this book more highly to any of the following seekers: Mystics of EVERY religious persuasion, Students of Mysticism, Witches, Wizards, and other Students of Magic, Seekers of Gnosis, Energy Healers and people interested in learning the power of healing practice, anyone who wants to open their mind to a new vision of the Divine and Divine Reality, Poets and Writers and Artists. And the open minded, mature individual.

A Flame Burning Bright
By Gavin Andrew
"...if we have undergone the elemental purification of walking life's path in honour and integrity, we partake of the holy mystery that says, "Here lies the way to ascension (the road to God), here lies the way to decadence (the road to oblivion), here lies the road to the Faerie country (the road to magick)." The Witch, honouring his or her spiral nature, will often simply walk in the direction of the middle way (the Faerie Road), because he or she will know intimately that a road or path is never one-dimensional and will eventually turn and twist and bend - the crooked path."

And that is only in the preface, before we even hit the introduction.

The chapters move in a familiar pattern: beginning with Circle-casting, then elemental work, then invocation of divinity, and then moving on to subjects such as spirit-allies, trance-possession and spell-work. He balances nicely between theory, practical, and the personal - although to be honest the personal stories were so interesting that I would have liked more of them, and in greater detail. His musings on the relationship between humanity and the gods, and their expressions within our own psyches, are quite profound, and worth the price of the book.

His central argument is that modern witchcraft is an ecstatic earth-based Mystery religion - although I don't agree that witchcraft is one single thing, he argues very convincingly that its essence lies in techniques that allow the practitioner to commune with divinity through altered (ecstatic) states of consciousness. Hence his use of the term `shamanic'.

I would have liked a greater emphasis on primary sources - Gede tends to reference other Pagan authors when he could easily cite scholars - and he can be a bit inconsistent with footnoting. For instance, he references the Orphic initiatory declaration of "I am child of Earth and of Starry Heaven..." without citing a source and this is a habit throughout.

His strength is his passion for his subject, and the lyricism he brings to his writing. Just when I think he is straying into formulaic `how-to' territory, he blindsides me with something from the well of his being:

"...simply know is to hover above the primordial waters and to behold the unfolding of creativity. It is to rest in the primal origin and flow from that place and to that place, over and over. When I am connected with the underworld, my ancestors, that vast and unravelling lineage of legacy, I am tasting the salt and the sweetness of the sea and drinking from the well; this is how I know."

`Ecstatic' captures an outpouring of spirit from Gede Parma - and `ecstatic' is the key word here. He is a flame in the international Pagan movement, a Light Bringer, and my only concern is the old saying about the light that burns twice as bright.

Far Beyond Expectations
By L. G. Morgan
I have to admit to being one of those readers of occult books that had a preconceived opinion about a publisher. It's been many years since I read anything put out by Llewellyn, but I still thought I had a pretty good idea of what material to expect. So I will pay Gede Parma's book one of the largest compliments I can in saying that it single-handedly improved my opinion of its publisher! This book is both smart and poetic, it explores dimensions of witchcraft practice and philosophy that you don't get in the typical rehashed, 'how to cast a circle and call the quarters 101' book. What is most inspiring about this book is it doesn't just discuss the 'ecstasy driven' dimension of witchcraft, but it positively breathes and exudes that quality, so that simply reading it alone seems to alter consciousness like reading a good invocation. This for me is the litmus test for an inspired writer, and Gede passes this test with flying colours. I believe this to be the work of a spiritual teacher of great importance who we will hear a great deal more of in the future, and one that should not be missed by any serious student of witchcraft.

Everybody Loves a Good Drought: Stories from India's Poorest Districts, by P Sainath

The poor in India are, too often, reduced to statistics. In the dry language of development reports and economic projections, the true misery of the 312 million who live below the poverty line, or the 26 million displaced by various projects, or the 13 million who suffer from tuberculosis gets overlooked. In this thoroughly researched study of the poorest of the poor, we get to see how they manage, what sustains them, and the efforts, often ludicrous, to do something for them. The people who figure in this book typify the lives and aspirations of a large section of Indian society, and their stories present us with the true face of development.

Outstanding
By A Customer
Sainath's book provides vignettes of soul-destroying poverty and degradation in the poorest states in India. It is an attempt to correct the `event' approach which the majority of the media takes to India's ills, which tends to view India's problems simplistically as singular aberrations, rather than taking a broader `process' approach, which looks to less immediate causes. His writing is angry and passionate, but always clear.
What certainly comes through in Sainath's book is the incredible arrogance of much of the Indian administration. Save a few isolated cases, the examples of the arrogant official class are myriad - the official insistence that they know better than the very natives who had lived in an area for years; the mass sterilisation of perfectly good cattle, already adapted to the environment, in order to make way for a so-called "super cattle", which turns out to be useless; or the mass uprooting of millions of people to make way for useless dams, now brought to the attention of the West through the thankless activism of Arundhati Roy (the author of the God of Small Things). A consistent theme running through Sainath's reporting is a lack of honest and sincere consultation with the very people the `reforms' are supposed to help.
There are hopeful stories too - like the story of women's collectives. Sainath tells of how groups of women have gotten together and formed organised labour, and which do a better, more efficient work than the more `sophisticated' industries and companies. Indeed, industries come across as monopolies only interested in maintaining their corner of the market, and more than willing to resort to nasty tricks in order to maintain their dominance (for instance, creating rival groups to undermine the administration's trust in such organised groups, social ostracism, even physical abuse). Corrupt officials don't help these collectives' chances either - since the collectives' cheaper and more efficient labour threaten the kickbacks the officials get from the industries.
The Indian middle class are also chastised by Sainath. Like their Western counterparts, they require a diet of horror stories to grab their attention. Hence, stories are often reported as ahistorical events, rather than dealing honestly with the process which led to the `event' in question. More than this, the middle classes have become so numbed to the poverty of the majority, that they require exceptional suffering to warrant their time - thus, there are reports of `epidemics' and `droughts' which are often exaggerations or mistruths.
After a while, I felt myself becoming numbed by the stories. There were simply too many tales of woe. This isn't really a complaint about Sainath's reporting, but maybe more of a plea for longer, more detailed stories from him. But this is the nature of his book, which is essentially a compilation of newspaper articles. Although Sainath makes a plea in his book for a view of Indian poverty as process rather than event, sometimes I felt his stories were too short to support the process approach he himself advocates. Still, this should not stop any reader interested in India from reading this book. It is a shocking indictment of the India that should have been.
A standard criticism of works like Sainath's would be that it is merely critical, and doesn't provide any answers. How can one learn from the mistakes of one's predecessors? The impression I got from Sainath was that the best that could be done is more consultation, more historical awareness, more backup studies, more studies of the actual effects of the reform process itself on the environment and the people actually involved, and so on. It's not a particularly innovative conclusion, but it's probably realistic.

Sainath's book opens a window onto the real India.
By Romi Mahajan
This timely and important book is a must-read for anyone interested in understanding the India that does not make it onto the covers of coffee table books and glossy magazines. Sainath spent years in the poorest districts in India, attempting to understand how people with absolutely nothing by way of resources manage to eke out a living--one story is about men who transport over 900 pounds of coals on their bicycles, walking marathon-length distances every day, to earn the princely sum of 10 Indian Rupees (25 cents) per day.
Sainath is the most irreverent and committed journalist in India today. His stories, written for the Times of India, are full of pathos, but also of optimism--optimism born of his discovery that the poor in India are organizing to fight for their rights, have maintained a sense of dignity, and continue to live their lives against the most difficult odds.
The stories of government mismanagement of funds earmarked for rural uplift are perhaps not surprising, but for many, the stories of the venality of corporations and the tales of institutions like the Army running roughshod over the rights of hundreds of millions of India might just open eyes that were glued shut to the injustices prevalent in the Indian social matrix. The stories of India's 80 million tribal and indigenous people, Adivasis, are heart wrenching and fantastic--such stories cannot be found in mainstream publications.
Sainath has done an enormous and important task here: I recommend this book to everyone.

Insightful and Sobering.
By Ajit G.
With the recent hype of globalization and the changes transpiring in India, the myth that poverty has been eradicated, or is at least receding in India has pervaded the media. P Sainath takes this illusion head on and dispels it in this compelling account of the realities of rural poverty in India. Gritty, no-nonsense, Sainath avoids sensationalism and sticks to the facts through well-researched accounts of the living conditions of what is, in truth, a majority of Indians. Over 600 million people still live below the poverty line in India(depending on what source one uses for defining poverty) and Sainath, through years of work in the field, details their plight. He brings to light that hunger is but a single element of poverty--one might meet the minimum caloric intake to be considered "above the poverty line", while in truth living in a state of real poverty. Having had the opportunity to hear him speak live, I can say with the confidence that the book conveys his firebrand approach to the issues; with passion and verve he relates his tales of woe with critical insight and uncompromising integrity.

If this book has a weakness, it is in its repetition of account upon account of despair without offering potential solutions to alleviate the crisis. A great companion book to this excellent work would be Abraham George's "India Untouched: The Forgotten Face of Rural Poverty", which examines the crisis of poverty and offers realistic and pratical solutions that have been implemented.
