Dr Sarah Simblet teaches at the University of Oxford, has drawings in national and private collections, including the Royal Academy of Art, London and Ashmolean, Oxford, and has had three solo shows of her large-scale work. Her broadcasting work includes interviews on BBC Radio 4, acting as a consultant for Watchmaker and for Discovery Channel's Art-Science documentaries, while she has also appeared on BBC3 and Channel 4.

Having this book is like having a botany art museum at home.

[[VIDEOID:moY4ROOS7AC1ZT]]Botany for the Artist is a gorgeous reference for plants. The pages are filled with a mix of photographic plant portraits and Sarah Simblet's detailed sketches. Everything's beautifully laid out. The exquisite illustrations in the book are mainly black and white.

As with typical DK books, it's also filled with educational information. Every part of the plant is explored, from the roots, stems, leaves, flowers to the fruits. They are provided with scientific names and also interesting information on how they grow and their functions.

The drawing lessons are short two-page guides at drawing found throughout the book. There are tips on capturing likeness, establishing the composition, adding colours and details. Also included are selected features on Renaissance botany artist.

This is an excellent resource for botany artists. Having this book is like having a botany art museum at home.

Amazing resource!

Amazing resource, breath-taking imagery and photos. Excellent survey of Botany for the artist. This shouldn't be confused with a college level botany reference. This is botany for poets. But it covers the material a botanical illustrator must know without getting mired down.

I do wish they had covered a bit about the frequent confusion over tree identification and the tricky genetics that can baffle botanists as well as laymen. That really isnt much of a gripe to have.

covers many global topics

The book offers a global view of societies and economic development, with somewhat of an emphasis on how third world nations are faring. Thus various approaches to how a country can progress are described. These include a study of demography, especially of how when birth rates are greater than death rates, the age makeup of a nation can play a vital party in determining its prospects for growth.

Aid for developing nations is explained. For emergencies like famine or after civil unrest, this can greatly help. But classical economic ideas like free trade and comparative advantage are also offered as other pathways of development. The narrative suggests that in the long run, such methods are more sustainable than depending on the charity of foreigners for continually giving aid.

A widely publicised recent idea is also covered - microcredit for making small loans to budding entrepreneurs in developing countries. The winning of the Nobel by Yunus for this is mentioned.

Global warming is another topic in the book. The possible consequences are outlined, including for poor nations, with few resources to combat climate and sea level changes.

The book is in perfect shape(almost like new) considering that it was used. The writing is a little vague but readable. I am using it for class since it was the book to purchase for it. Regardless, I am very interested in reading it till the end even if in class we don't have to. It has helped me understand the concept on globalization in a broader perspective.

Great message--not just for Kwaanza!

Working at a school that's not-so-diverse, I sometimes have a hard time finding books that convey the spirit of holidays that aren't well-known. This book does a pretty good job of helping younger students understand the principles of Kwaanza--just don't forget to include them after you read the story! The last two pages give an example from the story of each principle. Simply as a story, the message is clear and a good one: Doing special things for others is not only thoughtful and caring, it makes US feel good, too. The illustrations are colorful and very nicely done.

I have paired this with a short video of a family celebrating Kwanzaa. You can find a good one if you search "Sesame Street Kwanzaa" online.

A must have for any Kwanzaa collection

Li'l Rabbit is not having a very good Kwanzaa. After all, being the littlest in the family isn't easy. The only part of Kwanzaa that he really loves is the big feast called Karamu, but this year Granna Rabbit is sick.

Li'l Rabbit thinks how Granna Rabbit told him that Kwanzaa is a special time when we help each other. That gives Li'l Rabbit an idea. He decides to bring Granna a special treat for Karamu. As he walks through the forest searching for the right treat, he runs into many of Granna Rabbit's friends. When he tells them Granna is sick, they all want to do something to help.

Li'l Rabbit spends all day trying to find something for Granna, but doesn't find anything at all. When he returns empty-handed, he has a big surprise--All of Granna's friends came with treats of their own. Li'l Rabbit is still sad though since he was the only one who didn't bring anything. Granna Rabbit reminds him that if he hadn't gone off looking for Karamu, it never would have found its way to them.

This fun story reminds everyone of the true meaning of Kwanzaa--coming together to help others. The repetitive lines in the book make for an interactive read and the illustrations by Shane W. Evans are bright and vibrant with a cartoon like feel sure to entertain. If young readers wish to learn more about Kwanzaa, they'll even find The seven principles of Kwanzaa listed at the end of the book. A must have for any Kwanzaa collection.

Adorable book. I love it and so does my ...

Adorable book. I love it and so does my 4 year old son. My husband and I have been trying to explain Kwanzaa and why we celebrate it to our son. We are fortunate to live in a community where there are many others that also celebrate - but he hears mostly of santa and presents at school. This book was a great introduction and he has more curiosity about the Kinora and other items in our house related to Kwanzaa and talks about that at least close to as much as the presents he will be getting. I loved the story of his grandmother and how it really brought the idea of 'doing for others' home.
