About the Author
Robin Capon was an experienced author and art journalist. He wrote several books, including with co-authors, David Curtis: Light and Mood in Watercolour 9780713489552 and Abstract and Colour Techniques (with Claire Harrigan) 9780713490558. He was a regular contributor to The Artist and Leisure Painter. Mike Bernard's various art studies includes time at the Royal Academy schools. He has exhibited at the Royal Festival Hall and the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London and was elected member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1997. His awards and prizes include the Stowells Trophy, the Elizabeth Greenshields Fellowship, the Silver Longboat Award and the Laing Award.

Acrylics dry to fast, but it can be a good thing

Honestly, avoiding the rut of getting caught up in trying to compete with a camera by rendering the subject, with tedious detail, might be another long but accurate title for this book. Let the viewer participate and relax with the fun of your own intuitive, God given skills. Get in tune with the fun of collage, texture and color. Really don't worry about aerial perspective or even try to fool the eye, in anyway, sure create both soft and hard edges, gray areas so that those pure chromatic spots sing, let the medium create its own complexity with a variety of tools and strive for balance and variety, but don't beat the horse to death. This is a wonderful book and it sets you free to take the fun of expressive painting seriously. I mean it is a two dimensional plane after all. Mike Bernard shows you how to be a painter and stop competing with natures order and complexity. Learn to suggest and create a balanced focus on the center of interest, but don't kill it by trying to hard. He has a method to his madness. I initially found Mike Bernard on the Internet by searching up some phrase through Google having to do with flat pattern, compositional design in painting and I knew instantly that he had something special. You'll love the book.

Love it!

As a mixed media artist, I enjoy looking at other artists work for inspiration and to see how they express themselves. So much mixed media work is cutsie. This work is impressionistic with a twist. I have been extremely inspired by the style and how the artist interprets plein air painting with mixed media. I definitely recommend this for someone looking to expand their boundaries in art and yet be taken seriously.

Very thoughtfully written with clear and concise methods of doing fine mixed media art. Good explanations / ways of thinking about composition, color and subject matter. Easy to read, holds my interest page after page. I love the balance the artist strikes between planning a painting and letting magic happen through the use of texture, limited palette and collage, allowing and encouraging lucky mistakes. This is a great book for artists who want to take their training wheels off. Tons of great artwork throughout by the artist Mike Bernard. My only disappointment is that the printing or photography on some of the pages isn't as sharp and clear as it could be to show off the art. I give it a five because the rest makes up for it.

About the Author
Kristofer Pierson is a pilot for a major U.S. airline based in New York who has been working in several segments of the aviation industry for the last two decades. He holds an ATP with type ratings on the Boeing 757/767, Bombardier CRJ900/700/200 Series, and Saab SF340. A former instructor and evaluator at the general aviation, collegiate, and airline level, Mr. Pierson has several thousand hours of flight experience as both a Captain and a First Officer. He has a B.S. degree in Airway Science – Aircraft Systems Management from Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana. Pierson does freelance speaking engagements with topics ranging from leadership, to flying, family, and even weather — he also teaches weather hazard awareness and safety courses, and is trained and certified by the National Weather Service to train severe weather spotters. He is the author of Pilots In Command: Your Best Trip, Every Trip, which capitalizes on his experiences as a pilot, a leader, and an educator.

The non-flying parts of being a great airline pilot.

This is well thought out, nicely presented, and filling an otherwise unmet need. It's about all the non-flying parts of being a great airline pilot.

"I wrote this book intending for it to become a guide for new or aspiring airline pilots, as much as for the experienced pilot who is looking ahead to upgrade"

In clear language he spells out things like crew briefings, CRM, operational integrity, known unknowns, non-normals, cockpit organization, layovers, and how a professional airline pilot looks and treats others. It's general enough to work for all the US airlines I've jumpseated on. A good review for folks about to be a first-time captain, or heading to their first airline job. Would also be approiate for many corporate jobs. However it's not for private or military pilots. And it's not about personal airmanship, but rather professionalism in leading a crew.

It's a little stiff, a little academic feeling, and no doubt that's by design to appeal to university flight departments and FAA ATP schools. A few more examples and stories might have been nice. The title is short and sweet, but the odd s in Pilots seems to be there only to distinguish it from a book by a different author titled Pilot in Command. But I couldn't fault the material. Nice summary of aviation human factors topics like CRM, pilot monitoring, etc. It's up to date (2015) with FAR 117 and the latest changes to the FAA ATP requirements.

"No matter what your background is, how many hours you have under your belt, or how many type ratings you have, you can start improving today by making a difference in how you operate."

There are lots of books on how to fly an ILS, aerodynamics, airliner systems, weather, regulations, airline history, on and on. But there wasn't much on the practical aspects of running a crew and being an airline captain. Now there is.

Should be AIRLINE Pilots in Command

I remember sitting in a few of Kris Pierson's classes back when we worked for the same airline, and jumped at the opportunity to pick up his book when I became aware of it. Overall, Kris accomplishes his goal of giving a great general overview of what it means to be a captain in the airline crew environment. The explanations of CRM and TEM are especially good, and throughout the book Kris does a great job of communicating a sense of what is expected of a good captain's attitude, professional conduct, managing their crews, and interacting with passengers.

I only have two criticisms that would keep it from being a 5-star book in my collection. #1: It's fairly short. I read it in a single afternoon. The information it presents is excellent, but at times it left me wanting more. In the beginning Kris talks about the idea for the book spawning from his blog posts, and that's really what it seems like. The information is good, but to be a truly great book on this subject I think it should have gone a bit deeper and broadened it's scope a bit. It does feel a little bit like a collection of articles or blog posts instead of a professional publication. #2: The title should be "Airline Pilots in Command". Since my last interaction with Kris I have since left the airline industry and began flying as a captain in corporate aviation. The book casually mentions corporate and/or charter operations (Part 135) two or three times. But, in a lot of ways there are very different considerations and responsibilities of being a PIC in the business aviation world compared to the airlines, which this book does not address at all. As long as you know that up front, it's a great read. Some chapters present information that would be valuable to any captain operating in a crew environment, regardless of whether they were flying passengers or cargo under 121, 135, or 91. Those sections make it an excellent first read for any new captain. Considering the book as a whole though, some of its content is either incomplete or almost irrelevant to those of us in business aviation that do not have the luxury of having a dispatcher to share responsibilities and decisions with. I thought it could have done a lot more to point out the differences in a PIC's responsibilities for operations outside of the passenger airline world. As long as you understand the scope of this book is narrowed primarily toward flying passengers at a 121 airline, it's hits the mark. I'm looking forward to the second edition!

great book but would prefer less biochemistry.............

overall, an excellent gastroenterology book.........however,too much biochemistry, for me......the treatments went in to too much detail, like in the hepatitis section, which I found overwhelming for a primary care doc; seemed to be perfect, however, for a gastroenterologist.....highly recommend the book.....should be enjoyed by the primary care doc.......ken Humphrey, md, abem, abfp.......

About the Author
Tom Almy has written application programs for many microcontrollers and microprocessors from Freescale Semiconductor, Intel, Zilog, Atmel, and others. He has taught courses in digital design and programming for over 20 years and has worked in the electronics industry for 38 years. Tom holds eleven patents, most pertaining to digital and analog circuit designs. Tom received a MSEE degree from Stanford University and a BS with Distinction in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University.

Great Book!

I'm in my last semester of college for Elec. Engineering. I took micro-controllers previously and have used them some for small projects. I'm using the mini-dragon+2 for my senior design and this book was recommended by my professor. I have to say it is a huge benefit for anyone doing an extensive project with a micro-controller from the 68HCS12 family. It is much more complete than 2 other books I have on the 68HCS12 machines made by Freescale.

Explaining the operation of each register without any introduction and conceptual explanation. Even if u r good in micro-controller programming, u can not understand the author easily before being familiar with the data-sheet. It might be a good reference menu, but never a good introductory study material. The author is always talking to himself but never think about what a new in micro-controller is thinking.

Great approach to learning how to use The 68HCS12

I used this book in a couple micro controller classes and found it extremely usefully. What I like the best are the examples in the book. After reading the text and then I would refer to the examples, it is the best way to learn. Great approach to learning The 68HCS12.

I would definitely recommend.

Ordinary Mortals Can Understand Computers

The liberal arts computing course follows one of two models. The easier of the two focuses on the impact of the computer on business and the applications used within a typical business. The second attempts to introduce the non-major to the skills and tasks used by a computer scientist. This book meets the requirements for the latter of these two models.

Beginning with a survey of computer history (alas, it minimizes the ABC Computer), it moves through computer hardware, abstract data structures and databases, and programming. It then moves onto the more specialized technical subjects of operating systems, computer networks, and theoretical computer science.

The author uses common, real-life, experiences to help the reader understand the technical issues within each of these topics. This makes the book readable, as the title indicates, to us ordinary mortals. In addition to the details included in the book, the author also includes "Further Reading" suggestions for the reader who wants to know more. Most of these suggestions are from the classical textbooks which cover the individual topics.

The book is recommended for a technologically based Introduction to Computer Science or for the general reader who wants to more about the internals of the computer science discipline. In addition to the book, a blog is written by the author to support the concepts presented in the book: "ordinary-mortals.blogspot.com".

Everyone should read this book to get a basic understanding what makes your computer go tick.

I read this book for a class and it helped me to get a basic understanding of how a computer works. This book showed me how all the main components of a computer work together in sync to create the machine I use everyday. The book used diagrams and simple explanations to show how the part worked individually. As our world gets more and more advanced fewer and fewer people understand what makes our world work. With computers this is no exception. More and more people do not understand how the technology in their hand works and this is a growing problem. Reading this books helps give anyone a basic understanding of how computers work. I would recommend this book to anyone that has a interest in computers and computing in general.

This book has changed the way I see my profession and judge my ideas. I've been in the marketing/advertising industry for over 15 years and had a hard time swallowing the hard truths contained here. But it was nevertheless extremely helpful and eye opening. I'm glad I came across this book after reading so much non sense, such as Love Marks, etc.

He's BACK and better then ever!

In the third instillation of 'Tug Harder' not only are we given the unique and amazingly creative story that Butch McLogic creates from his own universe, but in addition to everything, in the third instillation of Tug Harder, the artwork of Butch McLogic has beautifully evolved so magically that I'd almost assume he had years working on this book!

Page by page the artwork in this book was made to be hung on gallery walls, Butch honestly puts regular non pornographic comic books to shame! Story, pencil work, inking, fully colouring.... this book isn't just gay erotic smut, Issue three of Tug Harder is an artistic masterpiece!

Welcome Back, Tug!

I'm a fan of the Tug series from issue #1 and among the many pleasures of these books, I have enjoyed watching McLogic's growth as a comic book artist. Both his storytelling and his painting have blossomed with each book. McLogic balances steamy sex, laugh-out-loud humor (both verbal and visual), and a breathtaking sense of the male anatomy, about as well as anyone in the gay-erotic-comics universe. I can't wait for the next one.

Disappointed

I was a fan of the first two "Tug Harder" gay comics but I can't say the same of this one. The author may be the same but has the artist changed? Tug (Doug) himself does not look as comically nebbishy as in the first two issues; now he's just another pumped-up, hung gay porn guy. There isn't really a plot so much as a series of storyboards from various points in human history, hundreds if not thousands of years apart. I guess these are meant to riff off the difficulty the aliens (from issue two) had in sending Tug and friends back to this planet. Can't give this ish less than two stars (I mean, it IS professionally drawn gay comic porn), but I had expected a more coherent story. Not a happy way to end the series; they might as well have stopped at no. 2. Sorry, Butch.

This book, which is a series of Wigglesworth's sermons, was tremendous. We are meant to walk in victory in this life and in so doing point to the reality of the living God. With God on the throne, with Jesus in our hearts, with the Holy Spirit's power and leading in our lives, our faith is no mere belief or doctrine but a powerful, living, overflowing spiritual reality open to all. Wigglesworth put no constraints on God; he accepted Him at his Holy Word and gladly received all of the promises available to us all. Trust, yield, receive the Holy Ghost, know His presence daily, follow His leading - and wield His power to bring sinners to Christ accordingly. Wigglesworth's example is to be followed if our lives are to have the meaning and purpose God meant for them to have.

Powerful Book!

Smith Wigglesworth is known as a faith filled man of God whose ministry span several decades. He is known for his straight forwardness and his uncanny ability to trust God no matter what.

This man of God has confronted the devil where ever he met him and in his book Wigglesworth on the Anointing he showed the reader how to do the same. This book is a collection of sermons which were compiled into a book so that readers could experience a deeper anointing from God in their lives.

Wigglesworth points out that each Christian has the ability live in victory and power through the equipping of Holy Spirit. But in order to do so self must die. He points out that the devil will take all the comfort that we give him. In order to have victory the devil must be challenged and defeated and that can only occur through Jesus.

Each believer has a choice...you can stay at the level you are at or you can seek a deeper anointing. If you are ready for a deeper anointing then this book is for you.

Wigglesworth comes across as a powerhouse of faith. His book is written in a simple yet straight forward manner. There are some typographical errors and incomplete thoughts...nonetheless you will feel the anointing of God on you as you read his words.

This book is for people who want to experience a closer walk with God...a more powerful anointing on their lives, or who desire to do greater works for the Lord...

I loved the way the book shows all the different types of leaves. My daughter did NOT want to read these again this year as they were mixed in with our Halloween books, and these are just about LEAVES! This would be better in late September right before a leaf hunt walk.
