A Wonderful Resource for Signing Hymns for the Deaf

What a wonderful resource for a deaf ministry! Its focus is on relaying the concepts in the hymns to the deaf, not the exact words of the hymns (it is in ASL not Signed Exact English.) It does not have pictures of how to sign the hymns because its focus is not for people who just want to let the hearing watch an interpreter and see the beauty of the signs. It is to allow the person signing to get the message of the hymns to the deaf person in the congregation without having to spend countless hours thinking of how to put English into ASL. So it is written for those who have a signing vocabulary and a little experience. And the dictionary references are helpful so if there is a word you don't know how to sign...you can look it up. It is easy for even a beginner like me to use. Again, its purpose is to allow the signer to look at the words in this hymnal and sign them as they are written. It definatly cuts down on the amount of time needed to prepare for worship.

Excellent resource for worship, with old and new songs

Curt Keller and helpers in the Illinois Great Rivers Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church have provided an excellent resource for worship with the Deaf. The hymnal contains, in ASL format, every song in the United Methodist Hymnal. The hymns are conceptually accurte, with references to the "American Sign Language Dictionary" for proper signs of more obscure concepts. Although the Deaf understandably are left out during hymn singing, the interpreter can include them in the worship through use of this reference. The hymns contained in this book include standard, traditional titles and several more contemporary songs, as well as songs from different ethnic backgrounds. This hymnal need not be used only by United Methodists, as the hymns it contains are standard throughout denominations. This is a "must have" resource for interpreters of worship.

When I purchased this book I expected to see the signs with the words. The book is a good resource, but unfortunately not quite what I expected. Would not have purchased if I knew the signs were missing.

Well, I needed a text book. I do not if the problem lies with Amazon search or the seller. When I searched I put in the books title, edition, isbn number and copyright date. The book I recieved was 37 years old. Pretty much useless.

Not what I expected

It is a review of what Pixar did to stay creative despite its growth. But the books has too much of "we are a great company with great employees" and less of an insight of what you can learn from them. The final chapter gives you some lessons but i feel that the same things could have been said without so many pages.

Este fin de semana comencé a leer el libro Creatividad SA, Cómo llevar la inspiración hasta el infinito y más allá y me parece que es lectura esencial. La buena noticia es que está en Español además de estar en Inglés.

A 'Must Have' for every dog owner!

When the Canine Good Citizen program debuted in 1989, I was enthusiastic about it. Even then far too many laws were being aimed at our dogs - restricting our ownership of dogs - and I was worried. I felt that the CGC program might be able to help dog owners by promoting responsible dog ownership and by highlighting good dogs and good owners. When the first test was held in San Diego I was delighted to be one of the first evaluators.

Today, twenty years later, my dog training business - Kindred Spirits Dog Training - holds numerous CGC classes and tests every year. We have also incorporated the Puppy STAR program into our puppy classes.

"Citizen Canine" by Mary Burch PhD, the Director of the CGC Program for the American Kennel Club, is a wonderful resource for dog owners who might be interested in the CGC, as well as dog trainers, dog clubs and other who might wish to promote the Canine Good Citizen program.

Each of the ten test items are described in detail. Additional information on ways to train for the exercise is given, too, but most importantly there is also information about problem solving; what to do should your dog have a problem with one of the test items. In addition, Burch explains why this test item is important and how it applies to daily life with your dog.

The book itself is a delight. It's easy to read and understand. The language is for everyone and behavioral terms are not given in 'techno speak.' The photos are in color, are bright, and illustrate the text well. The pages are heavy and should withstand repeated reading and referencing.

I have been a fan of the author for many years. I have probably 'bugged' her a few too many times over the years with questions and comments about the CGC program, but she has always been patient and ready with an explanation. I am glad this book is available; I will be ordering copies for all of Kindred Spirits' trainers.

If you are looking for a book to help you in training your dog to pass the CGC (Canine Good Citizen) Test, or if you are looking for a book to help you in training your dog in "basic dog obedience training," then you need look no further, because Citizen CANINE, written by Dr. Mary R. Burch, is the book for you.
While the primary objective of this book is to help you pass the CGC Test you will find, as I did, that when you check it's contents Dr. Burch went much further than that extra mile in furnishing you information not only about the CGC Test, but also about "basic dog obedience training," as well as information on many other dog related subjects.
In writing this book Dr. Burch explains why it is important that your dog learns and obeys certain commands if it is to be a "Good Citizen." She next explains "step-by-step" how to train your dog to obey these commands, and supports her instructions with an outstanding number of excellent photographs.
This book provides the best information I have found on how to train your dog to take the CGC Test. I also found this book provides excellent information on "basic dog obedience training," as well as serving as a "training source" for those contemplating taking the TDI (Therapy Dogs International) Test.
As a "dog trainer," an AKC CGC Test Evaluator and a TDI Test Evaluator (plus the owner of a very active GSD "therapy dog")I have to put this book, Citizen CANINE at the top of my recommended "must have" list for my students.

CGC prep and so much more!

Aiming for taking the Canine Good Citizen test, I thought it might be helpful to have a written reference instead of just following the guidelines found on the AKC website, so I came across this book--the "Citizen Kane" film reference was a clever enticement to go with this one too!

I thought it might be some nice pat fluffy overview in print, but I was quite pleasantly surprised--it's a real gem! It's so well organized, nice layout and color photos, with chapters providing an overview of each of the ten elements required for the test, as well as what behaviors will cause a fail and what will not. Each chapter very thoroughly details how to train and prepare your dog for the requirements, not just with the aim of passing, but with an emphasis on understanding that the very heart and point of the test is training a dog that is a safe and pleasant member of the community who will be a good ambassador for responsible dog ownership. Other chapters go on to cover other areas of dog training, such as therapy work and agility.

This book is going to be a useful resource for years to come--it should be essential reading for any dog owner!

John Dean understands the research of social scientists Adorno (The Authoritarian Personality) and Rokeach (The Open and Closed Mind) These are books that author Peter Thomas obviously never read and probably would not understand even if he did.

The Conservatives waste of time

The conservative movement must have a place somewhere that continually spews out bad books to counter well researched serious books. This is another propaganda book that must come from there. If you notice at least 5 books come out each month with the same lame authors that hatefully bash the Moderate, Democratic or Liberal side. If you add this to the 24 hours of anger filled conservative talk radio. It looks like they have a problem with any other ideals except their own. If they would have their way it would be a democracy like Iran and they would be the supreme leaders. Freedom of speech would only be on their terms.

How does an author find a publisher for this drivel? Where are the credentials of a scholarly, well-researched disputation, if this purports to be one? This is nothing more than a couch-potato, knee-jerk spasmodic reaction from the lunatic fringe of the far-right to the work of an acknowledged apostate from the conservative movement when it was conservative, and not the neo-oddity it became. If you buy this book it is because you have too much money, too much time or you believe in the tooth fairy. This thing belongs on the trash-heap of history and judging by the Amazon Sales ranking it is on its way there, albeit not fast enough ...

This was much thinner and less durable than I expected. It was not worth the money. I'm keeping it because I bought it for my Dad as a gag gift, but do not think it was worth the money. And, the side was bent and now has a permanent crease because of the packaging.
