The only workable solution was to start afresh, maintaining the same general philosophy and concept for Chromatography Today where possible, while creating essentially a new book.

The format of the new book is modular, with extensive cross-references to permit rapid location of related material using different separation concepts. Important features are extensive tabulation of essential data for performing separations and an extensive bibliography to the most recent literature.

About the Author
Prof. Poole was born and educated in the United Kingdom receiving a B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Leeds (1971) followed by graduate studies at the University of Bristol, MSc. in analytical chemistry (1972), and Ph.D. with Prof. E. D. Morgan at the University of Keele (1975) on the analysis of insect molting hormones. Since 1980 he has been at the Department of Chemistry, Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, USA, except for 1995-1996, spent as the Governors’ Lecturer and Professor of Analytical Chemistry at Imperial College of Science, Technology & Medicine, London, in the United Kingdom.

Prof. Poole is a polychromatographer with broad interests in the separation and detection of small molecules in biological, environmental, and food samples; sample preparation technology; and computer-aided data analysis techniques. He is the author of over 325 research papers, an editor of the Journal of Chromatography, and a member of the editorial boards of 5 other analytical chemistry journals. In 1985 he received the Tswett Medal of the International Symposium Advances in Chromatography, in 1991 the Jubilee Medal of the Chromatographic Society, and in 1997 a D.Sc. from the University of Leeds (UK).

A great essence for chromatographers

It is nicely edited; clearly and deeply discusses the topics with very recent and relevent current research work. I believe this book explains generally all possible areas of chromatography. It is highly recommended and will serve as a great reference for all researchers and students.

A classic landmark reference for chromatography. Chapter 2 (the column in gas chromatography) and 3 (instrumental aspects of gas chromatography) are very relevant - and excellent for hard core gas chromatographers

More than I can absorb!

This book is simply too complex for what I was looking for. Anyway, with few years trying to remember calculus, physics and other topics I think it could be useful for me. I give it 4 stars because I know it is valuable and the information worth the money if you are completely focused on this area.

It fulfils its purpose

As someone who has been working with Oracle for years, I was pretty confident about my SQL knowledge but I decided to buy this book anyway in order to fill some small gaps that I noticed when I checked the topics covered in the exam. I am glad that I did, because the gaps were a little bit bigger than I thought and some of the topics I was feeling very confident about needed some polishing.

As I am used to working with strict naming conventions, a basic question such as whether or not is possible to give the very same name to a table, an index or a constraint never occurred to me before (the answer is yes, as they belong to different namespaces). I also thought that I knew perfectly well everything related to joins but I found little surprises such as a predefined keyword for the Cartesian product (CROSS JOIN) or that a column of datatype TIMESTAMP WITH LOCAL TIME ZONE can be used as a PK but a column of datatype TIMESTAMP WITH TIME ZONE cannot.

The book is well organized and it covers point by point the objectives of the Oracle exam. The examples are well chosen (no need to be in front of your computer) and the way the author explains each topic is so clear that the book could also be used by a beginner as a learning tool. I could only spot a small typo (SEELCT instead of SELECT on page 521) and probably one of the questions on a self test about the use of a pseudocolumn on page 163 that could have been improved a little bit:

SELECT ROWNUM, *
FROM PORTS
ORDER BY PORT_NAME;

It fails with a syntax error but the author didn't mention that it can be solved by using an alias:

SELECT ROWNUM, p.*
FROM PORTS p
ORDER BY PORT_NAME;

But these are really unimportant details. If you have not taken any Oracle exam yet, the one provided with the book will give you a very good idea about what to expect, but be warned that questions in the exam are a little bit harder. For me, this book was a key element for passing the exam and I can surely recommend it.

Got me a passing score after less than a week of study.

This is a great book, covering all of the relevant topics in detail. The chapters and sections are in the order the certification objectives appear on Oracle's 'Exam Topics' page for this test, so it's easy to navigate and find your trouble spots. There are over 200 end-of-chapter questions in the book, and that's all I used to study for this exam. After only a week of study, I passed the exam with no other preparation except for the experience I've gained over the short time I've held my job. I can only imagine how well I would have done if I registered later for the test and gave myself more time.

I initially deducted a point from my review over the Windows-only nature of the included CD (waah, waah, whiny Linux user), but looking back I sincerely believe that this book's printed content alone makes it well worth the low price. It contains all the material you would find in a thousand+ dollar course in an easy-to-navigate, well-written package. You should definitely purchase it if you are planning on taking the Oracle SQL Expert exam.

Worthwhile guide to help you for the exam.

This is my review 3 months after I bought the book but just 2 days after taking the exam......and PASSING it on the first try! This is the 2nd book that I read after first reading Matthew Morris' Study Guide for 1Z0-047: Oracle Database SQL Expert: Oracle Certification Prep.

That one is a small guide (150 pages). Steve O'Hearn's books is 700+ pages. Though I have 17yrs of experience, I knew my SQL knowledge was intermediate but after going through this guide, saying it was intermediate was barely enough. I now TRULY feel that after reading this book and Morris' guide that I feel way more comfortable in saying "expert", but "expert" truly comes with real-world experience. But the guide will help. The end of chapter quizzes and also the accompanying practice exam CD definitely helps.

My advice is do NOT take the practice exams on the CD until you are VERY close to feeling comfortable in taking the real-world exam. And when you do take the exam take them as close as possible to the real exam. Whatever settings there are make sure they mimic the real world.

I studied from mid-April to mid-July, so a total of 3 months and this helped me PASS the exam. It is 120 minutes long (2 hours) and 70 questions total and you must get a minimum percentage right to pass. 66% is passing. Not 66 questions! As that would be a minimum of 94% passing. At that rate, very few people would pass. I got a 78% (55 out of 70). I used up EVERY second. I had 45 seconds left to spare to go over any questions I had marked but alas had little time.

Study long and slowly and take your time, as there's no rush to take the exam. They're offered daily. And good luck.

Small, usable, super helpful

This little book is a big surprise. It's small, about the size of a largish Daytimer, almost 7"x8". Every page is filled with diagrams and color drawings illustrating every joint that's used in American woodworking. There are plenty of color photos also.

I'd worried it might be too small to be useful but it's the opposite. Because it's small (feels like a little binder), it doesn't take up much space in the work area and you can also carry it around easily in your glove compartment or tool box. It will be there when you need it. The shiny cover means sawdust slips right off and it stays clean.

The most helpful part is that Noll shows exactly how to set up various tools. Where to put the wood, set up the jigs or cutting guides, even how to proceed safely with your hands. This is a significant aid if you've never done a certain joint with a power tool before.

Highly recommended.

This book is simply amazing. It shows you any joint you could ever want to build and how to do it and it does it with full color photos and drawings. There is not a single page of fluff. Every page gets right to the point and tells you what you need to know. It is also extremely well organized, not only by being intelligently divided into sections, but also with color coding so you can find what you want with ease. In addition, there is a joint index in the back of the book that shows small pictures of every joint in the book so you can flip through it and find what you're looking for if you only know what it looks like, not what it is called. That alone is worth the money but, fortunately for us, the publisher went the extra mile and made this book with a spiral binding so it stays open, and printed it with a really thick and glossy cover so it resists wear when in use around the shop, and the interior pages are all printed on thick paper stock. It's also compact (but not too small) so it isn't bulky or in your way when tyring to use it as a reference while working. This is a true book for use around the shop and it has gone beyond what I ever expected to find in a joinery book. I can not recommend it highly enough.

So many books show the woodworker bent over the project instead of the actual pieces of the project coming together. This book shows detailed, helpful pictures of each step of the many different joints. The spiral-bound format makes it ideal for the shop -- you can lay the book down and have your hands free for working. This is by far the best guide I've seen for joinery.

outstanding guide to playing stride piano - work required

Stride Piano Tricks by Ari Kast is an excellent guide to playing stride piano. We first get a basic introduction to music theory, which includes learning songs in the roman numeral chord patterns rather than the usual stuck in one key. I knew this from other works, but it provides a nice place for the average piano player who was not taught this bit of theory in their childhood lessons. Then we get a "Bootcamp" of 12 basic tricks. Ari does say "Bootcamp will be tough, but at the end of it you will have some solid skills to work with." (page 48) Unless you are already a accomplished piano player, this will take 2 -3 months to master.

Ari moves on to bass line, using a chapter on rhythmic and a chapter on harmonic bass line tricks.

Chapters 34 - 42 are flourishes, runs, scales, and vamps, before chapters 43 - 58 on "The Right Hand Dance." Ari finishes with "Master Classes" outlines of the styles of James P. Johnson, Fats Wallar and Donald Lembert. Ari finishes with a few brief synopses of some styles (blues, bookie-woogioe, dixieland, New Orleans Jazz, Swing, gospel continous bass, baroque and ragtime. Then a few well chosen further resources are listed.

Throughout the book are ample suggestions in the repertoire to listen to, and examples of each technique/trick. With the aid of the Internet, most of these are available.

Is this an easy book. NO!! This is NOT a quick and easy, play stride piano today book. This is a detailed outline of Stride Piano techniques, explained in simple language with examples, demonstrated on the available audiophiles, and available in the repertoire. According to the notes on the author, it took Ari a year to gather this material, organize it, and write the book. I am sure for the average Thompson grade 3 pianist, it would another year or more of intense practicing and listening to master the Stride Piano Style. But this book will get you there if you put in the time.

Ari wants you to practice the chords, chord inversions, scales, basic finger patterns, riffs, flourishes, finger dances to the point that these are like words in your vocabulary. Ari compares learning Stride to "learning a language, where you first must fill your brain with some words so that later, when you wish to speak, these words come to you quickly and easily as you assembly them into sentences." (page 127)

The book is well written and will enable an average piano player to master the stride style with probably 12 - 18 months of work.

Phenomenal, must-own piano instruction!

This is by far the best piano instruction book I've ever owned.

It kicks off with the most easy-to-grasp layout of music theory you could possibly imagine, but that's just the starting point. Inside you'll find a massively comprehensive step-by-step guide to the mastery of Stride Piano, among the most thrilling, enjoyable modes of playing ever conceived. Think of Fats Waller and the rollicking style associated with him and other greats from that era and you'll know what I mean.

Along with the always lucid, down to earth tone of the instruction, the author provides a link to an online audio collection of all the lessons contained in the book-- allowing you instant access to beautifully played demonstrations of every single riff, run or trick (and there are tons of them). It's like having the most patient piano teacher in the world right next to you on the bench, instantly demonstrating each new lesson as many times as you want.

As others have pointed out, stride is not easy and a great deal of practice will go into learning it-- but never time better spent, as you'll see when you find yourself able to burst forth at the keyboard with this super-exciting style, adaptable to any song (as the author explains in full detail).

A brilliant manual (only one like it available) for anyone interested in playing jazz piano, this book would be well worth the investment at ten times the price.

A Wonderful Surprise!

I'm a beginning piano player but have some background in music theory. I bought this book because I love the Stride style and was suprised to find in the first section (music theory and chord construction) a foundation that I will use in all aspects of my playing. If you're a beginner, I suggest that you avoid becoming a player who is limited to playing only printed arrangements, but learn how to make music yourself by creating your own arrangements. Ari Kast's book can put you on that path. His treatment of the subject is clear, concise and very accessible. I'll leave it to others to comment on the quality of the remainder of this book as I am only beginning to learn Stride and do not feel qualified to comment.
