Ronald Carter is Research Professor of Modern English Language in the School of English at the University of Nottingham, UK. An Interesting Open University Set-Text that Explores the Potential for Creativity and Inventiveness in Everyday Discourse!

Ronald Carter's publication, 'Language and Creativity: The Art of Common Talk' is an attempt to build on existing theories of creativity in order to examine whether language can be a creative phenomenon in everyday conversation, or specifically reserved for the solitary literary genius. It asks questions such as whether we create language ourselves or simply build upon existing idioms within the general mass populace, bringing about an argument as to whether anyone can create linguistic creativity, either with conscious effort or via literary devices.
The book itself is in actuality the first set-text for the Open University Level 3 module 'E301: The Art of English', which explores the English language as a creative phenomenon in both spoken and written interaction. I chose to take this module as an optional course in order to complete a BA in Humanities with English Language, and this book certainly aids in helping to understand what the OU's course materials attempt to teach its students. In fact, Ronald Carter himself provides a few articles and chapters to the E301 module, so this first set-text is an excellent addition to what is an already interesting academic journey.
Published by Routledge in 2004, it can be said that the examples that Carter provides are a bit dated, especially since, in 2014, we are steadily entering into a greater technological age with smartphones, and computer tablets, for example. (This goes for the course itself I would say.) However, Carter's utilisation of the Cancode database and heavy focus on other such linguistic corpora illustrates just how he attempts to explore everyday language as creative in its ubiquitous presence.
Splitting his publication into three parts of 'Backgrounds and Theories', 'Forms and Functions' and 'Contexts and Variations', Carter outlines examples and explorations of spoken discourse taken from the Cancode database across six chapters altogether. He focuses on the clines and continua of linguistic creativity, with background exploration of theories from fellow linguists and scholars, in order to examine how our everyday speech can be seen as a creative act, using viewpoints from various cultures and time periods.
I would say that 'The Art of Common Talk' is definitely not intended for light reading; far from it. The E301 course team gives its students two weeks to read this set-text, and I found it extremely difficult to follow for the first few days. However, once I got into Carter's format and began to understand his terminology better, I became enthralled with the idea that language can have the power for fictional worlds to be created on a daily basis, via our creative methods of language usage. We ultimately have power over our spoken interaction, which can be either intertextually influenced or created via interdiscursive methods.
If you are an aspiring linguist and decide to pick up this book as some exploration of the art of spoken discourse, please be patient and take your time in coming to grips with Carter's own specific methodology regarding his subject matter. I would give the same advice to Open University E301 students, and I would also advise that you work with your tutor and fellow students in examining Carter's viewpoints from a critical perspective, especially since it is more than likely that the OU will expect at least some reference to this material when submitting your tutor-marked assignments online.

About the Author
Clarice Lispector was born in 1920 to a Jewish family in western Ukraine. As a result of the anti-Semitic violence they endured, the family fled to Brazil in 1922, and Clarice Lispector grew up in Recife. Following the death of her mother when Clarice was nine, she moved to Rio de Janeiro with her father and two sisters, and she went on to study law. With her husband, who worked for the foreign service, she lived in Italy, Switzerland, England, and the United States, until they separated and she returned to Rio in 1959; she died there in 1977. Since her death, Clarice Lispector has earned universal recognition as Brazil's greatest modern writer.

Benjamin Moser is the author of Why This World: A Biography of Clarice Lispector, which was a finalist for the National Book Critics' Circle Award, and is also the editor of a new translation of ​Clarice ​Lispector's work​, of which this is the sixth volume​. A former books columnist at Harper's Magazine, Moser is now a columnist at The New York Times Book Review, and is currently at work on ​the​ authorized biography of Susan Sontag. He lives in the Netherlands.

Katrina Dodson's work has appeared in Granta, McSweeney's, and Two Lines. She is a PhD candidate in Comparative Literature at the University of California, Berkeley.

Clarice Lispector is one of the greatest cultural treasures of Brazil

Clarice Lispector is one of the greatest cultural treasures of Brazil. Her razor-sharp insight into the ordinary (and the extraordinary) aspects of the human condition was unmatched, and her writing honored the Portuguese language with a beauty and nobility that is difficult to match. Having grown up as a devoted reader of her stories and novels, to which I return constantly in search of unqualified aesthetic pleasure, I was very happy to see this beautifully produced and magisterially translated volume. Lispector's voice is embedded in my mind through her chiseled and astonishingly beautiful Portuguese, but I have to say that I cannot imagine her stories better translated than they are here. In sampling a few of my old favorites, I was thoroughly convinced that, had Lispector written in English, this is how she would have written. I sincerely hope that this new book will bring many readers to her unique universe and help to secure a place for Lispector among a wider audience and next to those with whom she truly belongs: Jorge Luis Borges, Virginia Woolf, Joyce, and Kafka, to name a few. She is an artist of the greatest magnitude and of universal scope.

A LITERARY GEM

As a prolific reader, for some reason there are a few things I rarely do, for no particularly logical reason, over the last 30 years or so > Buy and read novellas; books which are collections of an author/s short stories and rarely books that were originally written in a foreign language and later reinterpreted into English. I incidentally happened to read an article a few weeks ago about a mid-twentieth century author (Clarice Lispector) which left me beguiled. The newspaper article also referenced this particular book (collection of short stories) by Lispector, which would soon be released. I decided to buy it on a whim. What a great decision! I have been completely enthralled for the last week with the diversity, drama, wit, humor and human introspection in this brilliantly creative collection of stories. While the book will likely hold less appeal to younger readers (under 20 or so) I believe it will definitely hold interest for a wide diversity of mature readers (those among us with a few more years of life experience behind us to provide perspective).

Beautiful edition, lovingly compiled

No one starts a story off better than Clarice Lispector, one of my favorite authors. From the first story: "The clock strikes nine. A loud, sonorous peal, followed by gentle chiming, an echo" to the last: "I doubt that death will come. Death? Could it be that the days, so long, will end?"

I'm not satisfied that those are the best examples. There are much better ones, but I couldn't be bothered to type them out because they just don't stop. The beginning just seamlessly flows into the rest of the story.

Many of the stories here are more traditional than her longer works, less experimental. But there are definite exceptions, like "Brasilia," where she effortlessly paints impressionist atmosphere rather than realist portraiture. She's so skilled at writing a mood, a fear, a hope, more than a straightforward narrative arc. Philosophical, charming, witty, stark, surprising, unusual. She deserves mention alongside Borges, Italo Calvino, Chekov.

I finished The Complete Stories a few days ago but couldn't bring myself to write a review because it feels like the book deserves much more than that. It really does. And the translator, Katrina Dodson, did an incredible job, although her translations made me wish I could read Portuguese. The edition is beautifully designed and crafted. The intro focused a bit more on her looks than I liked. Oh well.

A Must Read For Couples!

I decided to purchase "Tantric Massage for Couples" because Tantric Massage is a topic that has long-held my interest. I am interested in what makes and breaks relationships, and relationship counseling. Improving intimacy with a romantic partner can only enhance the relationship, and I can not think of a single activity that would help with intimacy issues better than massage; add a tantric element and you simply can't go wrong. The author presents tantric massage in an interesting and easy to understand manner, that kept me wanting to know more. I liked that there was a Tantric Touch topic separate from Tantric Sex. I also like that the author covered basic massage, so that people are able to experience intimacy separate from a sexual experience. Following the techniques and information in this book will no-doubt increase intimacy in your relationship on all levels.

This book helped my marriage so much. Things weren't going so well and I knew I had to try something different to get back to how we were, get that spark back, spice things up again. Her birthday was coming and I asked a friend who's a couples therapist for her opinion and she said why not try some tantric sex stuff. Got this book and gave it to her, she was a bit surprised at first but we decided to try it anyways and I can say now that our relation is better than ever. They way you both can connect physically and spiritually with these techniques makes making love a whole different thing, more beautiful and delicate, and you'll both feel how you become one. It's an okay book! I think the author did a great job explaining the importance of communication. Understanding couple massages can help in dull relationships. There are other books that are written better than this...but it gives you an understanding on what could happen in your relationship if you give it a try. Massages are relaxing to begin with and when they become sensual it is much better...

Imagine that you are sitting at home on a Saturday night and have just tuned in to the basketball game. What do you see? Players running back and forth at break-neck speed? Fancy footwork and a great move to elude a defensive player? A three-point shot that drops through the net with an audible "swish"? Perhaps you even notice the crowd cheering, the head coach appearing just a little more at ease, or the athletes offering encouragement to their teammates.

The more you watch, the more you appreciate the remarkable amount of action in an average basketball game. While that may be obvious, something even more remarkable is perhaps less obvious. Although records, awards, and titles may be the simple goals of any basketball player, what goes on inside an athlete such as LeBron James is much more complex and fascinating than meets the eye.

The mark of any champion can be found in his or her perseverance and dedication to training for excellence. As a young child, James amused himself for hours at a time with a miniature ball and hoop. But how did this very basic activity contribute to his outstanding ability on the court? How did simple childhood play maintain and improve his skill level throughout the crucial stages of growth and development? Further, what is the best way to train? Would James be the success he is today if he had used a different training regimen?

Another quality that champion athletes possess is the ability to overcome adversity. In 2003, speedskater Cindy Klassen sliced open her right forearm in a training accident, severing tendons, a major artery, and a nerve. Amazingly, she began training again only two months after reconstructive surgery. Less than three years later, at the 2006 Torino Olympics, Klassen won five medals, making her the most decorated athlete of the Games.

What was going on in Klassen's mind when doctors told her she might never regain full use of her hand? What was going on within her body as she gracefully powered her way around the Olympic speedskating oval? How did she ensure she had enough energy to compete in five events? Are we all capable of that level of endurance, or did Klassen possess a unique supernatural trait? And where did she find the energy to pace herself for a 5,000-meter race? This raises a range of other questions - where did this energy come from? Was it derived from the food she ate? How did her body store and allocate energy to support long, tiring races? Where did she find the burst of energy for a sprint to the finish line?

Successful performances also require some degree of muscular training. What muscles did James develop to make him a fast and agile runner? Do these muscles bear unusually large amounts of stress? Basketball players are particularly prone to ankle injuries; what is it about the sport that makes its athletes so vulnerable? Do drugs or treatments exist that may prevent such mishaps? And while we are on the topic of drugs, how do steroids and other substances influence athletic performance? Does an athlete's requirements for training change with drug use? Maybe an athlete's ability has little to do with years of practice. Certain laws of physics can be applied to sport, so it may be that Klassen knew something about biomechanics that gave her a competitive advantage. Maybe she understood the proper technique to maximize skating efficiency while minimizing fatigue. After all, principles of biomechanics have been used by sport scientists for many years in sports such as gymnastics, pole vaulting, and cycling.

In a league full of talented defensive players, how does James manage to score so many points? Was he lucky enough to be born with remarkable shooting accuracy, or did he have to develop this ability? As an outstanding individual player, James's talents are not limited to his phenomenal physical skills: he also has exceptional vision. His ability to read the play and anticipate how it will unfold helps him unleash his trademark passes. What goes on in his mind to make him always conscious of every player on the court? Does James ever get nervous or lose his focus? There must be days when athletes just don't feel they can perform up to their potential. Every athlete is prone to such doubts over a career. But how was Klassen able to stay motivated to train and return to form after a serious injury? What does it take to remain competitive year after year with the same focus and drive? How does James rise to the occasion in a big game while others wilt under the pressure? With the salaries that many professionals are bringing in these days, the motivation to perform might be found in their back pockets.

When you review the number of games a basketball player plays in a season, year after year, with different teams and different teammates, the question arises: How do they stay "up" for every game? Does James ever relax and perform only marginally? Did Klassen have physiological characteristics that allowed her to endure more pain than the average person? Did her experience and years of training help her overcome an injury that could have ended another skater's career?

What made the difference for these two athletes? Their personality characteristics certainly helped both rise to stardom in their respective sports - time after time they excelled against the best competitors the world could offer. What made the difference? Was it because they could afford the best coaches, trainers, and equipment? This brings up the issue of money. Where do astronomical sums of cash fit into the broader picture of sport? Do large salaries make players excessively greedy, to the point that they are willing to strike, risking the loss of an entire season of play? Does this change how the fans perceive players? Does this aspect detract from the beauty and tradition of sport by placing it in the hands of capitalism and big business?

And speaking of fans, how do we, as spectators, view sport, and how does it affect our lives? Every North American has certainly had some degree of exposure to basketball, soccer, and other sports. Increasingly, as women and minorities seek the opportunity to play, and as citizens' coalitions band together to prevent televised violence, sport has become a focus of political and social issues.

As you can see, a single glimpse into the world of sport can generate discussion over a variety of subjects. And that, specifically, is the purpose of this textbook. The chapters that follow expose you to a variety of perspectives associated with physical and health education. You are most likely familiar with the sporting and physical activity aspects of these courses; however, this course is designed to provide a unique opportunity for students to apply sports-related ideas to associated areas including medicine, sociology, physics, and business. With the expansion of your knowledge in these areas, you should be motivated to strive for a higher quality of life through your own level of physical fitness. Rather than simply tell you that healthy living is desirable, we will show you why. For this reason, the following chapters are structured so that you have the opportunity to apply the knowledge you learn.

About the Author

As well as writing for teens, S. M. Hall is a journalist whose work included a column for the Guardian when she was living in the States. She has taught speech and drama and was recently involved in staging a musical in Qatar. Her husband, who was in the rock business, is custodian of John Lennon's childhood home in Liverpool. Somewhat rough, but interesting story about a girl spy

Maya Brown is a fifteen-year-old Muslim teenager raised by an intelligence agent who rescued her from the fire that killed her family in Kosovo. She's a proactive young woman who doesn't like to sit and wait for problems to be solved. If she sees a chance to act, she's going to take it, whether the police or Drug Unit or whoever is ready - which isn't always the best plan.

BREAKING THE CIRCLE begins when Maya is robbed by a young woman named Kay and a boy named Gerard. When she runs into Kay later, she learns that Kay is an illegal immigrant working as a prostitute for the men who brought her into the country and Gerard is a drug dealer. Maya gets revved up to save Kay and get Gerard arrested. But she quickly learns that Gerard is but a small cog in a large cartel and that it's very hard to save a drug addict, because the thing they care about most in the world is their next fix.

The Maya Brown Missions have a more realistic feel than many other kid spy books I've read, such as the Alex Rider series. Maya's not working for an organization or armed with cool gadgets. She's bumbling around on her own. While her plans are often terrible, she is good at thinking on her feet and managing to keep her cool in tough situations.

BREAKING THE CIRCLE is written a little simpler than it needs to be. To me, it read like a middle grade novel, but I feel like sex slavery is more of a young adult topic. (Appropriately to a younger age group, Maya slips pretty easily out of any danger of being violated herself. Which I am thankful for, because I don't want to read about a plucky fifteen-year-old heroine being raped.) I just feel like the book's subject matter calls for slightly more complex writing.

But BREAKING THE CIRCLE is pretty fun, with lots of action, and it's nice to have a book series featuring a girl spy. This series isn't my favorite, but there's definitely an audience for it.
