Stories: All-New Tales, by Neil Gaiman (author and editor), Al Sarrantonio (editor), Joe Hill, Joanne Harris, Richard Adams, Jeffery Deave

Stories is a groundbreaking anthology that reinvigorates, expands, and redefines the limits of imaginative fiction and affords some of the best writers in the world-from Peter Straub and Chuck Palahniuk to Roddy Doyle and Diana Wynne Jones, Stewart O'Nan and Joyce Carol Oates to Walter Mosley and Jodi Picoult-the opportunity to work together, defend their craft, and realign misconceptions. Neal Gaiman, a literary magician whose acclaimed work defies easy categorization and transcends all boundaries, and "master anthologist" (Booklist) Al Sarrantonio personally invited, read, and selected all the stories in this collection, and their standard for this "new literature of the imagination" is high. "We wanted to read stories that used a lightning-flash of magic as a way of showing us something we have already seen a thousand times as if we have never seen it at all."

Joe Hill boldly aligns theme and form in his disturbing tale of a man's descent into evil in "Devil on the Staircase". In "Catch and Release", Lawrence Block tells of a seasoned fisherman with a talent for catching a bite of another sort. Carolyn Parkhurst adds a dark twist to sibling rivalry in "Unwell". Joanne Harris weaves a tale of ancient gods in modern New York in "Wildfire in Manhattan". Vengeance is the heart of Richard Adams's "The Knife". Jeffery Deaver introduces a dedicated psychologist whose mission in life is to save people in "The Therapist". A chilling punishment befitting an unspeakable crime is at the dark heart of Neil Gaiman's novelette "The Truth Is a Cave in the Black Mountains".

As it transforms your view of the world, this brilliant and visionary volume-sure to become a classic-will ignite a new appreciation for the limitless realm of exceptional fiction.

A strong, widely ranging anthology
By K. Bunker
In the introduction to this volume of short stories, co-editor Neil Gaiman laments the narrowness of "commercial fantasy", which "tends to drag itself through already existing furrows, furrows dug by J.R.R. Tolkien or Robert E. Howard". So the goal (as I read Gaiman's rather vague introduction) was to gather together a collection of original short stories that explore the possibilities of the fantastic outside these well-plowed furrows.

This is, of course, not a new idea. There are legions of stories and novels that have traveled the realms of fantasy without the help of hobbits or barbarians. And indeed, many of the stories here fit fairly neatly into some existing sub-genre: ghost story, vampire story, etc. A few stories have no element of fantasy, but confine themselves to bad or weird real-world goings on.

The question of whether this volume breaks new ground aside, it's a strong collection, whose hits easily outweigh its misses. The stories are mostly by well-established authors, with awards and best-sellers to their credit. The stories are described as "all-new", so presumably they appear here for the first time.

"Blood" by Roddy Doyle: A sorta-kinda vampire story. Pretty good, but I was annoyed by the pointless affectation of not using quote marks. You ain't Cormac McCarthy, Roddy, and it's a pointless affectation when Cormac McCarthy does it, anyway.
"Fossil-Figures" by Joyce Carol Oates: An evil twin story. A well written, respectable piece of work of the sort Oates is known for.
"Wildfire In Manhattan" by Joanne Harris: A 'the old gods are still among us' story. Nice; had me smiling over the artistic turns of phrase at several points.
"The Truth Is A Cave In The Black Mountains" by Neil Gaiman: Good, if fairly typical fantasy story, written in typical fantasy-speak: "In the high lands, people spend words as if they were gold coins."
"Unbelief" by Michael Marshall Smith: A short 'gotcha' story, somewhat less of a cheap shot than that makes it sound.
"The Stars Are Falling" by Joe R. Lansdale: My choice for the best, most powerful story in the book. A brutally dark and Hemingway-esque tale of a WWI veteran's return home.
"Juvenal Nyx" by Walter Mosley: I found this vampire re-mix to be rambling and over-long.
"The Knife" by Richard Adams: A mildly interesting little short-short about a murder.
"Weights And Measures" by Jodi Picoult: A couple dealing with the death of their seven-year-old daughter, mixed with some whimsical magic realism. Ick. Not a good combination.
"Goblin Lake" by Michael Swanwick: Something or other about magically being given a choice between a life of reality and... something or other. I didn't find this one compelling.
"Mallon The Guru" by Peter Straub: An obscure piece -- obscure to the degree that I have no idea what the point of it was.
"Catch And Release" by Lawrence Block: A twist on the unpleasant, over-done genre of let's-spend-some-time-in-the-mind-of-a-serial-killer. Let's not. Not enough of a twist to keep this from being unpleasant.
"Polka Dots And Moonbeams" by Jeffrey Ford: Another opaquely obscure piece, but so delightfully written that I'm willing to forgive the sense of WTF. "and the moon rose slow as a bubble in honey"
"Loser" by Chuck Palahniuk: An LSD-addled college kid gets selected as a contestant on an insipid TV game show. The LSD makes this more interesting for the protagonist, but not for the reader.
"Samantha's Diary" by Dianna Wynne Jones: "The Twelve Days of Christmas" written out as an allegedly humorous story. Tedious as a song, way more so as a short story.
"Land Of The Lost" by Stewart O'Nan: A story of obsession. By definition, obsession is rather pointless, and so was this story.
"Leif In The Wind" by Gene Wolfe: Science fiction blending into fantasy, as Wolfe often does. Beautifully written and delightful. One of the closest approaches to an "upbeat" story in this volume.
"Unwell" by Carolyn Parkhurst: A completely wonderful story about a completely despicable old woman. Black humor at its tastiest. After reading this, I looked up the author and added a novel of hers to my wish list.
"A Life In Fictions" by Kat Howard: In contrast to the heavyweight authors who make up most of this book, this is Howard's first published story, and it's a good one. A nifty fantasy about the unexpected consequences of being "written into" an author-boyfriend's fiction.
"Let The Past Begin" by Jonathan Carroll: I found this one to be rather plodding and self-important.
"The Therapist" by Jeffery Deaver: A clever bid at updating the theme of demonic possession, but I found it tedious and amateurishly written.
"Parallel Lines" by Tim Powers: A solid, effective, well written ghost story.
"The Cult Of The Nose" by Al Sarrantonio: A Maupassant-esque tale of is-it-madness-or-is-it-supernatural-goings-on. I suppose this is meant to be a pastiche of, or homage to, Maupassant, but to me it just felt like a rehash of an old idea.
"Human Intelligence" by Kurt Anderson: The volume's only straight-ahead science fiction story, and a pretty good one. An alien studying human civilization finds his ride home is overdue.
"Stories" by Michael Moorcock: A deeply felt portrait of an author and the world of writing, presumably somewhat autobiographical. Marred by way the heck too much name-dropping, as if we're supposed to be impressed that Moorcock can mention Marcel Proust and Albert Camus and Jean Gabin and Francis Bacon and Alfred Bester and Lawrence Ferlinghetti (etc., etc., etc.) all in the same breath.
"The Maiden Flight Of McCauley's Bellerophon" by Elizabeth Hand: A long, leisurely story about a magical flying machine and honoring past love. Good enough to get me sniffling.
"The Devil On The Staircase" by Joe Hill: An excellent fairly tale about murder and lies ends this collection on an impressive note.

And then what happened...
By Susan Tunis
Above are the four words that Neil Gaiman writes about in his introduction to the collection edited by himself and Al Sarrantonio. "And then what happened."--the four words that every storyteller longs to hear. That child-like impulse is the essence of what he and Sarrantonio wanted to evoke with this collection. On that basis, they were largely successful. These diverse stories, written by an impressive array of writers, kept me turning the pages and, yes, wondering what would happen next.

In some cases, I didn't have to wonder long. The stories range in length from a mere three pages to an impressive 48. Despite his name appearing in 72-point font on the book's cover, Mr. Gaiman contributes only one story in addition to his introduction. So, die-hard Gaiman fans, don't be disappointed. Instead, revel in the embarrassment of riches that have been brought together. This story collection features contributors who are among the best in genre fiction (Gene Wolfe, Joe R. Lansdale, Michael Swanwick, Peter Straub), literary fiction (Stuart O'Nan, Joyce Carol Oates, Walter Mosley, Roddy Doyle), and popular fiction (Jeffrey Deaver, Jodi Picoult, Joe Hill, Chuck Palahniuk). Honestly, I barely brushed the surface of all the big-name contributors, so very many of whom are long-time favorites of mine.

I'll be honest, not every single story is a slam dunk, but not one was a stinker. The one I liked best (possibly Carolyn Parkhurst's featuring an unreliable narrator) might be the one you liked least. These things are so subjective. The overall quality of contributions is high. Whether you're looking for quick palate cleansers between longer works, or you're looking forward to reading this collection cover to cover, I feel confident in asserting that there's something for everyone to be found within these pages.

It was a nasty surprise and completely overshadowed the better stories of this collection
By Alex A
If you're sensitive of violence towards women then don't read this. At least three stories in this anthology reference raping dead women. It was a nasty surprise and completely overshadowed the better stories of this collection.

"The organizational scheme is logical. The sequenced chapters are progressively arranged with student learning in mind. At the initial, the author grasps the reader’s attention with the catchy topics.”

— Charlene Tuckerson, John F. Kennedy University

“The chapter checkup, the key terms with corresponding page numbers, and the chapter highlights at the end of each chapter are quite helpful.”

 — Cecilia Moore-Cobb, Pitt Community College

“A wide variety of examples and analogies is one of the book's many strengths. Specifically, references to pop culture help students readily identify with the material.”

—James Bower, Walla Walla Community College

From the Publisher
This text with readings develops students' basic critical thinking skills by means of several fresh materials and strategies: an easy progression from familiar, social examples to more complex, political and commercial examples; strong use of graphics; incorporation of multi-cultural examples and readings throughout; and an emphasis on print and electronic media as a way of illustrating the use of critical thinking skills in everyday life. The goal of this text is to train students how to evaluate the claims that responsible citizens, consumers, and social beings confront daily and how to construct and present effective arguments for their own beliefs.

From the Inside Flap
PREFACE

Everyone thinks. If you ask people where they stand on a particular issue, they will usually tell you what they believe and give reasons to support their beliefs. Many people, however, find it difficult to evaluate a written or spoken ,commentary on a controversial issue because both sides of the controversy seem to have good arguments.

The critical thinker is able to distinguish high-quality, well-supported arguments from arguments with little or no evidence to back them. This text trains students to evaluate the many claims facing them as citizens, learners, consumers, and human beings; it also helps students become more effective advocates for their beliefs.

Becoming a Critical Thinker is designed to be interdisciplinary and to be useful in courses in critical thinking, informal logic, rhetoric, English, speech, journalism, humanities, and the social sciences. It has also been used as a required text or a supplement in nursing programs and in workshops for staff development and business management. The skills that distinguish critical thinkers across various disciplines are presented in a clear and comprehensible manner. UNIQUE FEATURES

The process of becoming a critical thinker takes place when ideas are clearly understood and put into practice. For this reason, many elements of the text have been chosen because of their practical application for the student:

Each concept is explained with examples, and the examples often proceed from the personal to the social or political. In this way, students can see that the same skills used in understanding arguments in daily life are used in analyzing political and commercial rhetoric. Graphic illustrations help students visualize important concepts. Exercises of varying levels of difficulty are given throughout the chapters to help students practice critical thinking skills. Emphasis is placed on understanding and analyzing the impact of print and electronic media on arguments. Students are taught to construct and present arguments so that they can gain skill and confidence as advocates for their beliefs. There is an early and primary emphasis on understanding conflicting value systems and on ethics in argumentation and decision making. The articles and essays selected for use in the text are contemporary and express a variety of political viewpoints and ethical concerns. Multicultural perspectives are presented throughout the examples and articles. Many exercises and assignments encourage students to understand the perspectives of others and to broaden their own perspectives. There is a variety of writing and speaking assignments at the end of each chapter. The text is supplemented with an instructor's manual and test bank in addition to a Web site containing examples of critical thinking principles that can be used for classroom discussion. SPECIFIC CHANGES IN THE THIRD EDITION

This third edition of Becoming a Critical Thinker has been created with two priorities in mind: First, we wanted to retain and, in the cases of explanations of philosophical concepts, to improve the user friendly format of the first two editions. Also, we wanted to update readings and concepts so that readers will enjoy the application of critical thinking principles to current issues. New features in the third edition include:

Expanded supplementary resources for instructors. These include an instructor's manual with revised tests and an answer key for each chapter, discussions of chapter exercises, and suggestions for teaching critical thinking concepts. In addition, a Web site may be referenced for additional lecture material and student practice exercises. New articles and essays address current topics. This edition retains relevant articles from the second edition and includes new editorial essays and articles on such current topics as: The ethical dilemmas doctors face when deciding whether to prescribe placebos, problems in acculturation of Vietnamese immigrants, the use of expert testimony to overturn criminal convictions, the use of suggestion by retailers, citizen reactions to the new multiracial categories in the U.S. census, and a lawyer's use of listening to persuade jurors. New user friendly elements elucidate many of the basic concepts covered in the first and second editions. The definition of critical thinking and argumentation has been expanded with an emphasis on the distinction between argument and conflict. The sections on causation and deductive reasoning have been clarified with more relevant explanations and new illustrations. Stereotyping and conformity (including groupthink) are discussed as hindrances to critical thinking. A new outline on the topic of organ donation has been added to Chapter 10. Each chapter ends with a "Chapter Checkup" that tests students' knowledge of the information covered. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

My husband, John Diestler, remains an invaluable help in many ways. He provided expertise on the "user friendly" format; he worked out preliminary designs for the original and the new logos and figures in the text; and he made useful suggestions on the manuscript throughout its production.

I thank my editor, Katie Janssen, for her encouragement and expert guidance that enabled me to complete this edition in a timely manner. I remain grateful to Maggie Barbieri for her dedicated work on the first edition. I appreciate Edie Riker for her diligence, patience, and professionalism as she supervised the production of this text.

I am grateful to students who used the text and made useful suggestions for additions and changes: Warda Javed, Marites Ayson, Stephanie Jensen, and Malik Ali. Suzanne Barton helped me with manuscript changes and Helen Kalkstein, Rafaella del Bourgo, and Connie Anderson suggested interesting and relevant additions to the text. Several presenters and participants from the annual Conference on Critical Thinking at Sonoma State University, including William Dorman, Perry Weddle, Connie Missimer, Marlys Mayfield, Betty Duffy, and John Splaine, kindly shared a variety of relevant research material.

In addition, I wish to thank the reviewers for their invaluable advice and encouragement: Connie Anderson, Contra Costa College; Eileen Smith, Shasta University; Marek Wosinski, Arizona State University; Angela M. Gulick, University of Alaska-Anchorage; and Laura Lun Inglis, Buena Vista University.

For their practical help that allowed me the time and energy to write the text, I thank my father, A1 Goldstein and John, Zachary, Jenna, Laura, and Amy Diestler.

Above all, I am grateful to the Creator of the human mind.

Arsenal For Attacking Flawed Presentations
By M. Bennett
A presentor is usually happy when people pose questions, as long as they are not critical questions. Most of the time the audience doesn't pose any questions because they simply don't know what questions to ask or how to formulate those questions.
The prinicipal points of this book:
Establishing the issue and the conclusion.
- Knowing and agreeing with the counterpart on the issue prevents us from veering off away from the subject of discussion. People like chaning the issue when they feel trapped.
- Listening to the person's conclusion about the mentioned issue which will indicate the person's opinion.
What are the reasons for their arguments on a certain suject?
- Reasoning takes many roads but often we don't know how to counter weak reasoning. Key words that give way to faulty reasoning with no substance to back up the argument.
Finding words that are ambiguous
- Counterparts discussing a subject, saying the same thing with several key words but some words have many meanings. Make sure you are talking about the same thing.
What are the value conflicts and assumptions?
- Value conflicts are explosive because of different political, religous and moral beliefs. A speaker who is devoutly religious will try and bring biblical arguments in to reasoning which for someobdy who is an athiest, would mean absolutely nothing.
How good is the evidence: Appeals to authority and testamonials.
- Probably one of the most abused factors in supporting an argument. How often have you heard, "Experts on the subject state 70% of medical doctors say x,y and z habits are great for your health". Don't forget to ask who the authority is. The more general authority and testamonials are the weaker the argument. The authors of many surveys make them biased. e.g. If scientific study has proven that smoking is good for your health and the author of the article is a lobbyist for the tobbaco industry, could it be possible that the author has something to gain from the study? If so ask what other authors or experts say about the subject. The so called industry specific gurus who give their testamonials are in most cases biased, because they have something to gain with the report.
Deceptive statistics are also factors that need to be examined closely. When a presentor starts talking about averages and percentages, ask which average and how large the sampeling was on people who took the survey. You would be surprised about how many presentors do not know anything about the facts they are presenting.
The author does not only wirte about critical thinking but has included many exercises to acitvate the reader to look for faulty reasoning and how to build up questions to counter evidence being presented. It is a great introduction text to critical thinking.

Teaching Students to THINK!
By B. West Ph.D.
I first utilized this excellent book in undergraduate classes about a year ago.I enjoyed using it and it received accolades from the students, (once they realized that sometimes, thinking is WORK!)
It is "user-friendly", and the segments in each chapter are short but concise. There are numerous exercises after each section so that the student can put to immediate use, their newly acquired knowledge.
But I believe the highest praise came from the students that jokingly complained, "I can't think the same way anymore!" They had become "Critical Thinkers". And we can certainly use all of those that we can get!

This book changed my life!
By Philippe Haddad
I'm a very curious person. Inquisitive in all fields. I have been looking for a book to help me reason better since it's really the foundation for anything you want to learn. I was incredibly pleased with this book. It's really the best $55 I've spent in a long time.

The author really gives you much for your money. He covers everything Logical Fallacies to Social Psychology (Cognitive Dissonance) to Conflict Resolution.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK to anyone wanting to learn how to think clearly (or clearer).

P.S. I AM NOT AFFILIATED WITH THE AUTHOR IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM.

By MBC737 OYME
My son just finished his first year of 1st grade dual immersion, we speak English at home, I wanted a book to help him not lose the knowledge he's gained over the course of the Summer. I will say a lot of the info in here is the same as what he's already learned so I am glad I chose the second grade book rather than the 1st grade book. This book is a lot thinner than what I was hoping for, I feel the price should only be $2 or $3 rather than close to $5, however I also know in general the bilingual materials seem to cost more period. For example, I bought bilingual books from the scholastic flyers and they were a lot more than the books that were just in English. Overall, this booklet will do what I was hoping for. I hope my review helped you.

About the Author
Peter Gregory, retired manager at Westonbirt Arboretum in Gloucestershire, England, is the chairman and co-founder of the Maple Society and the editor of its journal. He has been involved with tree research, including maples, for more than five decades. He lives in the UK.

J. D. Vertrees (1915--1993) was an entomologist, nurseryman, and educator who collected rare and unusual maples in southern Oregon. He was probably the most knowledgeable grower of Japanese maples in his time, amassing an impressive list of awards. His 1.5-acre arboretum at Maplewood Nursery had the largest collection of Japanese maples in the United States. In 1997, Japanese Maples was selected by the American Horticultural Society as one of the 75 Great American Garden Books.

Preface to the Fourth Edition
When J. D. Vertrees published Japanese Maples in 1978, he wanted to provide a comprehensive source of information on the culture, identification, and nomenclature of Japanese maple cultivars. He also intended to reduce confusion and bring stability to the naming of these cultivars. That his volume has become an invaluable reference book, the bible for maple growers and enthusiasts worldwide, is a measure of its success in achieving these objectives.

Since the last revision of this work in 2001, communications and the exchange of plants and materials between maple growers worldwide has mushroomed, resulting in almost a doubling of the Japanese maple cultivars now grown and collected by enthusiasts. Hence the time is appropriate for a larger, expanded 4th edition incorporating many of the newer cultivars and any changes in the growing techniques, taxonomy and nomenclature which have occurred in recent years—thus making it a more comprehensive up-to-date reference or encyclopedia of Japanese maples. And, as in the previous edition, to avoid endless repetition, cultivars of Acer palmatum are cited without a species name (for example, ‘Red Pygmy’), while cultivars of other species are always cited with the appropriate species name (for example, A. japonicum ‘Green Cascade’).

The introductory chapters remain essentially unchanged, although some topics are given more or less attention to reflect current trends. Chapter 2 places more emphasis on how to avoid and correct illegitimate cultivar names, chapter 3 has an expanded section on growing maples in containers, and chapter 4 moves away from commercial propagation methods toward those for garden and amateur enthusiasts.

Clearly, the main revision occurs in the plant description chapters with the inclusion of more than 100 additional cultivars which have proven their worth or become readily available since 2001. A total of some 420 A. palmatum cultivars are described in chapter 5, while 80 cultivars of other Japanese maple species, including those of A. japonicum, are described in chapter 6. Between them, chapters 5 and 6 cover the majority of the Japanese maples in cultivation. The remaining cultivars are briefly described or listed in appendices C and D. The descriptions of cultivars known in the late 1970s are primarily derived from specimens growing in the Maplewood collections, augmented by written material from early literature. The descriptions of the newer cultivars are based on specimens seen in various collections and nurseries, material received, and information provided by the originators or other knowledgeable collectors and growers. It has been difficult to describe adequately all the subtle differences occurring between cultivars.

The plant descriptions indicate the likely mature size of a plant grown under normal garden conditions and care. The detailed leaf measurements have been replaced with general terms for size—small, medium, large—which are more useful to most gardeners. Where it has been possible to accurately determine the meaning of Japanese cultivar names, that information has been added. Since most Japanese maples can grow in normal garden conditions in USDA hardiness zones 5 through 9, that information is omitted from the individual plant descriptions. Plants noted as being “tender” are only cold-hardy to zone 6. The color illustrations of the foliage were planned to assist in identification and not to present landscape situations. Where practical, an attempt has been made to include photographs which show the plant’s main attractive feature, whether spring or autumn color, winter stems, unusual foliage, or so forth.

The appendices have been updated. An additional appendix includes a list of plant suppliers who stock a good range of Japanese maples. The index, with nearly 2300 plant names, serves as the definitive list of all published Japanese cultivar names. Included in the index are all the Japanese maple cultivar names published in books, journals, and major catalogs of growers, including synonyms, and the names of cultivars no longer in cultivation—so that Japanese Maples will continue to be the foremost reference book for this wonderfully versatile collection of ornamental plants.

This revision could not have been accomplished without the cooperation, help, advice, and encouragement of numerous friends, colleagues, and correspondents. Conscientious attempts have been made to check the correctness of the cultivar names, origins, and descriptions acquired from my own knowledge and experience or from information and material received, to maintain the standards set by J. D. Vertrees. Whenever possible, samples from two or more different sources were compared. Hence, any errors or weaknesses that may have crept in are mine and mine alone.

It is hoped that these additions and changes will help to foster and strengthen J. D. Vertrees’ principal aim of introducing stability in the naming of Japanese maple cultivars while, at the same time, preserving his ideas, research, and unique style of writing.

More and More Cultivars!
By Allan R
This book just keeps getting thicker and thicker with each release! Now it's a hefty textbook size. The quality of the paper and colors in the book is quite good. As far as the information contained within, it's in the same vein as the previous versions. I have the 2nd version only, so compared to that, it's similar, if not better organized. The authors have expanded on the first few chapters of the book, regarding the history, and care of maples, but it's basically just added information to the previous text (a lot of it is verbatim from the earlier edition). I like how the cultivars are now organized simply by name. I'm not sure if this was something done in the 3rd ed, but in the 2nd, the cultivars were broken down into leaf shape, and then alphabetical. This was more difficult for me, and really served no purpose (in my opinion). The layout now makes more sense. The information for each cultivar is similar to previous editions. A couple of paragraphs with factual information regarding leaf type, shape, sun/shade requirements, etc. And of course, it includes a lot more than previous editions, as new cultivars are introduced.

The book does have a few drawbacks though. My biggest gripe is with some of the photos. Though most are beautiful and accurate glossy photos, some are way overly photoshopped. Many people will make their maple selections based on what they think the leaves will look like, and some of the photos are so over the top, the reader will surely be disappointed when they see their maple in reality does not show the brilliant coloration as in the photo. One example is the photo of Ap Crimson Queen. You will clearly see the color "dial" in photoshop was turned to maximum, as the colors just simply look too saturated. There are plenty of other photos in the book which do not reflect the true nature of the plant illustrated. Comparing to my own collection, it is clear some of the book's photos have been tweaked to bring out aspects of the leaf which may not normally be so striking.

Another nit-picky problem I have is with some of the name changes. Though perhaps scientifically and technically correct, changing some of the names around just makes it confusing. I have known "Ap Aka Shigitatsusawa" to be Aka Shigitatsusawa for a long time, and that is the way most nurserys (online and physical) call it. But the author made a specific point to rename this selection Ap Beni Shigitatsusawa. It may be technically correct, but trying to find the former in the book leads to a dead end. There are other examples of this, and it's nit-picky I know...but perhaps they could have better led the reader to the new, corrected entry.

Overall, this is a nice, high quality book with good information. Though some of the photos could be more realistic, most are fine and only add to the information. It's one of the best quick reference books and makes a nice coffee table book. If you are a Japanese maple enthusiast, you'll find this book to be very good and full of good information.

Long-awaited 4th Edition finally appears
By Barbara Winch
It's very nice of Peter Gregory to continue to give J.D. Vertrees so much credit. This book is the bible of Japanese Maple enthusiasts and collectors all over the world. This edition is much more comprehensive than the 3rd edition and the quality of photos is excellent. However, I was disappointed that many of the stable and worthy North American cultivars aren't mentioned and hope they will be included in subsequent editions. Still, this fourth edition is a terrific resource.

Essential for landscape designers and nurseries that deal with Japanese Maples
By Gen of North Coast Gardening
As a landscape designer, a critical part of my work is in recognizing the subtle differences between plants and what they do, so that I can play off the most unique attributes and make a garden that feels different and unusual, while still using plant varieties that my clients will actually be able to find locally.

Choosing plants you know will thrive, while still incorporating a sense of inspiration and newness into each garden is a delicate balance. Books like this one are invaluable in choosing the most appropriate variety, or in choosing a substitute if something I love goes out of stock.

I've owned the third edition of this book for many years, and I go back to it time and again, because I've found the information available for free online spotty and inconsistent. This latest edition is packed with over 600 varieties, many of which are new and currently available in the trade. They've added 150 cultivars since the last edition came out, and I've looked up the unusual varieties I know of and some old standbys, and found them all present.

The most helpful part of this book is undoubtedly the photos of each variety. There are over 500 photos in the book, and in the encyclopedia section, it seems like two-thirds of the varieties listed have an accompanying photo, which is great for helping me expand my horizons and try new maples (even in bare root season when you can't see the leaves!).

Another thing I love is the guide in back which lists every variety in the encyclopedia in a chart, so if I'm looking for a red maple that doesn't get taller than 8 feet, I can just refer to the back of the book. I'm a little grouchy that I have to translate from the metric system to unravel heights, but ah well - we should probably join the rest of the world in their oh-so-civilized units of measurement anyway, so it's good practice.

Also? I was totally charmed by a few pages towards the back which list translations for common Japanese Maple cultivar names. One maple I love for its upright yet dwarf habit is `Beni Maiko', which means "deep red dancing girl". Another maple, `Beni kumo-no-su', means "deep red spider cloud of webs". How cool is that?

If you have an older edition of this book, I'd definitely recommend upgrading, as the new edition is about a half inch thicker than the old one and has so many more photos. Having so many new varieties listed is a real help as well.
