This cutting-edge synthesis of ideas and concepts from the cognitive, motivation, and neurobiological sciences sets out a unique theory of learning that should be of interest to everyone from education practitioners to neuroscientists. The authors base their Unified Learning Model, or ULM, on three core principles. Firstly, that learning requires working memory allocation (attention). Second, that working memory’s capacity for allocation is affected by prior knowledge. And finally, that working memory allocation is directed by motivation. These three principles guide a complete model of learning that synthesizes what is known from research in brain function, cognition, and motivation.

This, then, is a book about how humans learn. Its focus is on classroom learning although the principles are, as the name of the book suggests, universal. Engle demonstrates the role of correlations in financial decision making, and addresses the economic underpinnings and theoretical properties of correlations and their relation to other measures of dependence. He compares DCC with other correlation estimators such as historical correlation, exponential smoothing, and multivariate GARCH, and he presents a range of important applications of DCC. Engle presents the asymmetric model and illustrates it using a multicountry equity and bond return model. He introduces the new FACTOR DCC model that blends factor models with the DCC to produce a model with the best features of both, and illustrates it using an array of U.S. large-cap equities. Engle shows how overinvestment in collateralized debt obligations, or CDOs, lies at the heart of the subprime mortgage crisis--and how the correlation models in this book could have foreseen the risks. A technical chapter of econometric results also is included.

Prakash's discussion of how the colonial state used science to legitimate its rule, and how the nationalist anticolonial elites redefined and reinscribed science to legitimate their own goals is very thorough. He applies Foucault's notion of "governmentality" to demonstrate how science operated to control and maintain the populace. Highly recommended.

Not Science but more...

This not about science as such, but about the idea of science. This is one of best recent academic books that I have read on modern India. Using science as a window into the culture of modern India, or Indian modernity, Prakash provides a captivating account of how areas ranging from museums to religion to politics were refashioned. The book is also very elegant, starting with the cool cover, the well chosen chapter epigraphs, and chapter titles. You will come away with a very thoughtful, nuanced understanding of how the idea of science entered the constitution of colonial India. One last thing, though Prakash's approach is what would be called "postcolonial," it is solidly grounded in Indian materials while being very stylish. A real treat!

About the Author
Jo?o B. P. Soares is Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Waterloo, Canada. He has also worked as a research and development engineer at Pronor, COPENE, and Polibrasil in Brazil. He obtained his PhD from McMaster University working with Professor A. E. Hamielec. He has authored more than 160 articles in refereed journals and 11 book chapters. Professor Soares is a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada and is the recipient of the Premier's Research Excellence Award, the Union Carbide/ Dow Innovation Award, and the Syncrude/ CSChE Canada Innovation Award for contributions to Chemical Engineering under the age of 40. He is also Editor-in-Chief for the Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering and a member of the Executive Advisory Board of Wiley-VCH Macromolecular Journals. He is a consultant for several polyolefin-manufacturing companies in Canada, USA, Europe Asia, and Brazil.

Timothy F. L. McKenna is a Directeur de Recherche (DR2) at the Laboratoire de Chimie, Catalyse, Polym?res et Proc?d?s (C2P2, a CNRS laboratory), in Villeurbanne, France. He obtained his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, then moved to France to work with Elf-Aquitaine an Atochem on modeling polyethylene particle growth. After three years with Elf-Atochem, he joined the academic world in 1993 at the Laboratoire de Chimie et Proc?d?s de Polym?risation (LCPP, CNRS). Since then Dr. McKenna has authored or co-authored more than 180 papers and 8 book chapters, and is a consultant at companies in Europe, the middle East and Asia. He is currently an active participant in the Dutch Polymer Institute (DPI), an associate editor of the Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, and serves in the International Advisory Board of 2 Macromolecular Journals, and of Chemical Engineering Technology, all from Wiley-VCH.

Prof. Soares and McKenna have given in-house industrial short courses on Polyolefin Reaction Engineering to many polyolefin manufacturing companies worldwide. They also offer an annual short course on the same topic open to industrial and academic participants.

About the Author
Beddow was born and educated in England. As a Professor of Chemical; Engineering at U. Iowa, he has researched and taught in image analysis. He founded, and for ten years was President of The Shapespeare Corporation, making and marketing advanced image analysis systems. He has lectured all over the world. He has authored 20 books, 120 technical papers. He received the B.Tech from UMIST in 1954, and the Ph.D. from Cambridge University in 1959.
