Hitler's Final Fortress

In late 1944 Hitler designated several cities on the eastern front as Fortress cities to help solidify his defenses there. Several books have been written about the more famous ones, such as Posen and Königsberg. This book is about one of the lesser known fortress cities - Breslau. Mr. Hargreaves first relates Breslau's origins and history and the cultural impact of the Silesian capital, then proceeds to describe how, at first, the city went virtually untouched by the war until the approach of the Red Army in late 1944, then the subsequent attack and siege of the city in 1945. The story is mostly told through the viewpoint of the citzens of Breslau and the soldiers who defended it. Another subset to the story is how the Nazis "Germanized" the city before and during the war by getting rid of the Jewish population, then in a twist of irony, after the war the Poles and communists deported the majority of its German citizens to make Breslau a "Polish" city. In sum, this is a well written book about the tragedy of what happened to Breslau and its citizens during and after the war. Highly recommended.

A Recounting of the Death of a City

"HITLER'S FINAL FORTRESS - BRESLAU 1945", by journalist and historian Richard Hargreaves is a non-military book about a military event, the siege of Breslau in 1945 by the Soviet Union during World War II. If this sounds confusing, it's not. Rather than a battle history, where the author shows that this unit attacked here, and this unit defended there, Hargreaves follows the story of the city, from before the start of the war until its destruction during battle and ultimate rebuilding (but by the Poles, to whom it was transferred to after the war.) The author does this primarily through letters and accounts by the people who lived there, primarily Germans, but occasionally Soviets and Poles. He writes this history chronologically, recounting the struggles, horrors, incompetence, and brutality during this timeframe, using the city of Breslau as the central unifying theme.
Hargreaves introduces you to many characters as the history plays out, not all of which survive. He shows how the Nazi leaders, through willful incompetence and reluctance to disobey their leaders, failed to prepare this part of Germany for war and neglected to evacuate vulnerable citizens from the area until it too late, leading to the needless deaths of tens of thousands of Germans. And he also recounts how the Germans had scraped to the very bottom of their manpower barrel and beyond, forcing children as young as 13 into the fight, as well as older citizens aged well beyond military usefulness.
The siege itself was bitter and lengthy, and while total casualties were not on the scale of some of the largest sieges of the war, the destruction the battle imposed on the city was among the war's worst. By the end of the war, large parts of the city were completely destroyed. And for those Germans who survived the siege, worse was yet to come, as soldiers were shipped to the Soviet Union to be used to rebuild that country for years, and the remaining civilians were deported out of their territory forever, when Breslau was given to Poland. When that happened, Breslau ceased to exist, and Wroclaw was born.
While on the one hand, it is hard to feel sympathetic to the German leadership, who did the same or worse on Soviet and Polish soil earlier in the war, it is very easy to feel sorry for the sufferings of the ordinary German during this time frame. The author does an excellent job describing their struggles and misery, and unlike another reviewer here, I didn't find any problems with his syntax or style whatsoever. When I purchased the book I was expecting to read more about the military aspects of this battle, from the top down, so to speak, but now that I've read the book, I'm also happy with how the author built the book in almost narrative from, from the bottom up. Five stars.

An Excellent Human Interest Story

This book is so much more than just the siege of Breslau and for those interested in reading about the last dying days of the Third Reich, its terrible living conditions, its distraught people and desperate soldiers then you'll want to read this story.
The book begins with a capsule summary of Breslau in better days before the war with Russia. In fact, the people of Breslau had fairly normal lives during the war up to late 1944, missing all the Allied bombing that the western half of the country and Berlin received but the situation started changing as Konev and his 1st UF entered eastern Poland.
Food and other essentials were running low, sadistic Nazi town leaders running amuck to control its people and doubts of winning the war crept into the minds of many turning the atmosphere dour though the propaganda of super weapons conditioned some into thinking Germany would still win the war.
Using many first hand accounts from citizens, city officials, German soldiers, triumphant Russian soldiers plus insightful prose by the author, the book is a penetrating look at the psyche of individuals and a country that has fallen to unbelievable lows.
The military overview begins in 1944 at the Vistula bridgehead, hundreds of miles from Breslau. In mid January 1945, Konev, the smart and ruthless commander of the 1st UF begins his last push to the German border with the quick penetration of the Vistula defenses and with each passing day and with each fallen village his armies conquer, the lives of the Germans in the path of this unstoppable Red machine is chronicled.
During the long siege which occurred in the coldest days of winter, the author clearly describes the impact of the many days of shelling as well as the days of attack had on soldier and civilian defenders alike and despite all the death and destruction Brelauers endured. After the surrender on May 5th, Mr Hargreaves tallies up the losses and provides the general results of the siege.
The story, looking at the lives of many different people living with death, destruction and misery while living under a nearly four month siege against an enemy that wanted to extract every ounce of revenge they could is quite a read and is highly recommended for people interested in the end of the war or would be interested in reading on how people cope under nearly impossible conditions.
