Great story, pointless characters
By Carina G
Let me first say that I have read all of these books and love them. I would give this 4.5 stars if I could but I can't justify giving it 5 stars for one reason. That reason is Isabelle.

This character is seriously driving me nuts. What is the point? Pretty much her only lines consist of "I feel something" and, when asked what her feeling means "I don't know, but it's not good". Why?! Why does this character exist? She doesn't add anything to the story line. When I turn a page and see all caps I immediately think "oh no here we go again".

Like I said before, I love these books. I just couldn't hold back anymore. I had to get that off my chest after dealing with it over the course of multiple books. Seriously though, this series is great. If you've enjoyed the rest of it then read this book too. If you haven't read the series yet I recommend you start with the first book because this is definitely a series that must be read in chronological order to understand it.

The story itself is fine but I have some issues...
By darthhillbilly
My problem resides in the fact that the main character is not evolving with the story. For instance, if I had been "called" out on more than one mission, by the third mission I would have taken steps to up my odds of survival. The protagonist is more than aware that he will be called out again, but has not started running daily, taken any weapons training, or asked his witch stripper friend to prepare him some emergency "juju" to aid him on his adventures. He hasn't even assembled a backpack of useful items that is ready to go at a moment's notice. Being aware that there is a mystical world out there, he has made no efforts to broaden his understanding in any other way than to get what crumbs of information he can while on his excursions. It is driving me nuts that in no way has he tried to be prepared for the next excursion. I love the authors work. I also think he has the talent to stand with the greats. I just hope the next installment shows the logical progression of some sort of preparedness.

Could have been better...

I'm giving it three starts because overall I really like this series and it has promise. This book as a stand alone I would of given 2.5 stars, but you can't do that here. Once again Eric is being called to lend a "special" hand to those wrapped up in a supernatural bind. Holly who I thought would be joining Eric on his next "adventure" was left home to study the water that she doesn't quite understand and Paul is stuck at a wedding (who cares). So that leaves our "not a ghost" Isabelle to join him on his quest, which would of been great if she didn't have a headache. Maybe he should of left her home as well because she added nothing to the story. As we enter into this triangle of mist and dead things, Eric is once again questioning what's real, which I find super annoying due to everything that he's been through. We walk in circles, meet some interesting ppl and some not so interesting. We figure out everything we need to know (without Isabelle's help because SHE DOESN'T KNOW ANYTHING) and we finally make it to the bottom of the triangle. Okay, the showdown I've been waiting for!! Then Eric merely throws some orbs in a hole, and it's over. No blinding light pulsating from his "special" body to destroy it. No showdown with the devil (wasn't hell coming?). No special memory kick in that let him know he was a bad ass. Nothing. It really seems that anyone could of saved the day. The cat could have (and did on some level) saved the day. This was a let down to say the least. Hopefully in the next book Brian finds Isabelle a door that leads directly to Eric's attic or he can just leave her out. And please address what makes this guy so special. I'm trying to hold on and see this to the end, but you're losing me.
