A 'Must Have' for every dog owner!

When the Canine Good Citizen program debuted in 1989, I was enthusiastic about it. Even then far too many laws were being aimed at our dogs - restricting our ownership of dogs - and I was worried. I felt that the CGC program might be able to help dog owners by promoting responsible dog ownership and by highlighting good dogs and good owners. When the first test was held in San Diego I was delighted to be one of the first evaluators.
Today, twenty years later, my dog training business - Kindred Spirits Dog Training - holds numerous CGC classes and tests every year. We have also incorporated the Puppy STAR program into our puppy classes.
"Citizen Canine" by Mary Burch PhD, the Director of the CGC Program for the American Kennel Club, is a wonderful resource for dog owners who might be interested in the CGC, as well as dog trainers, dog clubs and other who might wish to promote the Canine Good Citizen program.
Each of the ten test items are described in detail. Additional information on ways to train for the exercise is given, too, but most importantly there is also information about problem solving; what to do should your dog have a problem with one of the test items. In addition, Burch explains why this test item is important and how it applies to daily life with your dog.
The book itself is a delight. It's easy to read and understand. The language is for everyone and behavioral terms are not given in 'techno speak.' The photos are in color, are bright, and illustrate the text well. The pages are heavy and should withstand repeated reading and referencing.
I have been a fan of the author for many years. I have probably 'bugged' her a few too many times over the years with questions and comments about the CGC program, but she has always been patient and ready with an explanation. I am glad this book is available; I will be ordering copies for all of Kindred Spirits' trainers.

A "MUST" BOOK FOR AKC "CANINE GOOD CITIZEN TEST" CANDIDATES

If you are looking for a book to help you in training your dog to pass the CGC (Canine Good Citizen) Test, or if you are looking for a book to help you in training your dog in "basic dog obedience training," then you need look no further, because Citizen CANINE, written by Dr. Mary R. Burch, is the book for you.
While the primary objective of this book is to help you pass the CGC Test you will find, as I did, that when you check it's contents Dr. Burch went much further than that extra mile in furnishing you information not only about the CGC Test, but also about "basic dog obedience training," as well as information on many other dog related subjects.
In writing this book Dr. Burch explains why it is important that your dog learns and obeys certain commands if it is to be a "Good Citizen." She next explains "step-by-step" how to train your dog to obey these commands, and supports her instructions with an outstanding number of excellent photographs.
This book provides the best information I have found on how to train your dog to take the CGC Test. I also found this book provides excellent information on "basic dog obedience training," as well as serving as a "training source" for those contemplating taking the TDI (Therapy Dogs International) Test.
As a "dog trainer," an AKC CGC Test Evaluator and a TDI Test Evaluator (plus the owner of a very active GSD "therapy dog")I have to put this book, Citizen CANINE at the top of my recommended "must have" list for my students.

CGC prep and so much more!

Aiming for taking the Canine Good Citizen test, I thought it might be helpful to have a written reference instead of just following the guidelines found on the AKC website, so I came across this book--the "Citizen Kane" film reference was a clever enticement to go with this one too!
I thought it might be some nice pat fluffy overview in print, but I was quite pleasantly surprised--it's a real gem! It's so well organized, nice layout and color photos, with chapters providing an overview of each of the ten elements required for the test, as well as what behaviors will cause a fail and what will not. Each chapter very thoroughly details how to train and prepare your dog for the requirements, not just with the aim of passing, but with an emphasis on understanding that the very heart and point of the test is training a dog that is a safe and pleasant member of the community who will be a good ambassador for responsible dog ownership. Other chapters go on to cover other areas of dog training, such as therapy work and agility.
This book is going to be a useful resource for years to come--it should be essential reading for any dog owner!
